Yamaha CHR15 15-Inch Passive PA Speaker

The Yamaha CHR15 is a 2-way passive loudspeaker that combines a 15-inch woofer with a 1.4-inch compression driver in a plywood bass-reflex cabinet, built the same way as Yamaha's higher-end CZR Series. It is driven by an external power amplifier.

Yamaha designed the CHR15 as a main speaker, so it suits bands, DJs, rental companies, houses of worship and venues that want full-range sound with strong low end, either on stands or flown in a fixed installation.

Key Features

15-Inch Woofer and 1.4-Inch Compression Driver

The 15-inch cone woofer has a 2.5-inch voice coil and the 1-inch-throat compression driver uses a 1.4-inch diaphragm, both with ferrite magnets and crossing over at 2.0 kHz. Yamaha customised these drivers for powerful, controlled bass and detailed mids and highs.

Power Handling and Output of the CHR15 Passive Speaker

The CHR15 is rated at 250 W noise, 500 W program and 1,000 W peak into a nominal 8 Ω load. With 95 dB sensitivity (1 W, 1 m), Yamaha quotes a calculated peak of 125 dB SPL, and the low-frequency range extends to 49 Hz (-10 dB).

90° x 60° Coverage for Main PA Use

A 90° horizontal by 60° vertical horn spreads sound evenly across an audience while limiting spill onto ceilings and floors. This makes the CHR15 a practical choice for front-of-house in halls, clubs and outdoor events.

Dual-Angle Pole Sockets

Two 35 mm pole sockets on the base let you mount the speaker level (0°) or tilted down by 7°. The downward tilt helps aim sound at the audience and away from reflective ceilings in low-ceiling rooms.

Rigging Points for Installation

Two top and one rear rigging point accept M10 eyebolts of 30-50 mm length, so the CHR15 can be suspended in a permanent installation. Two side handles help carry the 22.0 kg cabinet.

Plywood Cabinet with Polyurea Finish

The plywood enclosure keeps cabinet resonance low for a clean sound, and its black polyurea coating resists scratches from transport and handling. Two parallel-wired speakON NL4MP connectors allow easy linking to a second cabinet.

Dedicated Presets with Yamaha PX Series Amplifiers

Yamaha says CHR Series speakers get dedicated speaker processor tuning settings when driven by Yamaha PX Series amplifiers (firmware 1.63 or later) or other compatible signal processors. Using them takes the guesswork out of matching amplifier and speaker.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the CHR15 need an amplifier?

Yes. It is passive, rated at 500 W program into 8 Ω. Yamaha's PX Series amplifiers (PX3, PX5, PX8 and PX10 are sold at YMS) include dedicated CHR Series presets with firmware 1.63 or later.

What is the difference between the CHR15 and the CHR10?

The CHR15 is the larger main speaker, with a 15-inch woofer, 500 W program rating, 95 dB sensitivity and response down to 49 Hz. The CHR10 has a 10-inch woofer, 350 W program rating and a rotatable horn, and is aimed at compact installations.

How does the CHR15 compare with the DHR15?

They share the same driver sizes, 90° x 60° coverage, dual-angle pole sockets and rigging points. The DHR15 is powered, with a built-in 1,000 W amplifier, DSP and two-channel mixer, while the CHR15 is passive and needs an external amplifier.

Can it be flown or installed permanently?

Yes. Two top and one rear rigging point accept M10 x 30-50 mm eyebolts, which are sold separately. Installation should be carried out by qualified installers.

Can I tilt it down towards the audience on a stand?

Yes. It has two 35 mm pole sockets, one level and one angled at -7°, so it can be aimed down at the audience from a stand.
