Yamaha CHR10 10-Inch Passive PA Speaker

The Yamaha CHR10 is a 2-way passive loudspeaker with a 10-inch woofer and a 1.4-inch compression driver, housed in a plywood bass-reflex cabinet built the same way as Yamaha's higher-end CZR Series. As a passive model, it is powered by an external amplifier.

Yamaha designed the CHR10 for fixed installations, which makes it a good fit for restaurants, bars, houses of worship, meeting halls and fill positions where a compact cabinet, rotatable horn and proper rigging points matter more than a built-in amplifier.

Key Features

10-Inch Woofer and 1.4-Inch Compression Driver

The 10-inch cone woofer uses a 2-inch voice coil, while the 1-inch-throat compression driver has a 1.4-inch diaphragm, both with ferrite magnets. Yamaha selected and customised these transducers to deliver defined bass with low distortion and accurate mids and highs, crossing over at 2.5 kHz.

Rotatable Horn for Vertical or Horizontal Mounting

Nominal coverage is 90° horizontal by 60° vertical, and the horn can be rotated so this pattern stays correct when the cabinet is laid on its side. That makes the CHR10 easy to fit into ceilings, soffits and narrow walls.

Power Handling and Output of the CHR10 Passive Speaker

The CHR10 is rated at 175 W noise, 350 W program and 700 W peak into a nominal 8 Ω load. With 93 dB sensitivity (1 W, 1 m), Yamaha quotes a calculated peak output of 122 dB SPL, with a frequency range of 55 Hz to 20 kHz (-10 dB).

The enclosure is made of plywood, which keeps cabinet vibration low for a cleaner sound, and is finished in a tough black polyurea coating that resists scratches. At 13.7 kg, it is easy to handle during installation.

Optimised for Yamaha PX Series Amplifiers

Yamaha says CHR Series speakers get dedicated speaker processor tuning settings when driven by Yamaha PX Series amplifiers (firmware 1.63 or later) or other compatible signal processors. Loading these presets helps the speaker perform at its best and simplifies system setup.

Mounting, Rigging and Connections

A 35 mm pole socket on the base suits standard speaker stands, and two top plus one rear rigging point accept M10 eyebolts of 30-50 mm length. Yamaha's optional U-bracket allows wall or ceiling mounting, and two parallel-wired speakON NL4MP connectors make it simple to link a second speaker.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the CHR10 need an amplifier?

Yes. It is a passive speaker with no built-in amplifier, rated at 350 W program into 8 Ω. Yamaha's PX Series amplifiers, such as the PX3, PX5, PX8 and PX10 sold at YMS, include dedicated CHR Series speaker presets (firmware 1.63 or later).

What is the difference between the CHR10 and the DHR10?

Both use the same size cabinet, a 10-inch woofer, a 1.4-inch compression driver and a rotatable horn. The DHR10 is powered, with a built-in 700 W amplifier, DSP and two-channel mixer, while the CHR10 is passive and relies on an external amplifier, which suits installations with a central amplifier rack.

How does the CHR10 compare with the CHR15?

The CHR15 is the larger main speaker, with a 15-inch woofer, 500 W program rating, 95 dB sensitivity and response down to 49 Hz. The CHR10 is smaller and lighter at 13.7 kg, with a rotatable horn and U-bracket option that make it better suited to installations.

Can it be mounted on a wall or ceiling?

Yes. Yamaha offers an optional U-bracket for wall or ceiling mounting in vertical or horizontal orientation, and the cabinet also has M10 rigging points for eyebolts. Brackets and eyebolts are sold separately.

Can I use it on a speaker stand?

Yes. It has a 35 mm pole socket on the bottom of the cabinet for standard speaker stands.
