Four Mics, One Monitor Send, No Effects

The MG10 is where the MG range becomes a real live console. Four mono mic/line channels on D-PRE preamps, three stereo line channels, a one-knob compressor, three-band EQ, an AUX send for a monitor wedge and a separate monitor output. What it does not have is effects or USB.

That makes it a straightforward choice for a rehearsal room, a school hall, a small band that runs its own reverb from a pedal or a keyboard, or any job where you need a proper foldback feed but nothing digital in the signal path.

What You Get

  • Four D-PRE mic preamps on balanced combo jacks, with +48V phantom power and a 26 dB pad.
  • One-knob compressor. Yamaha's single-control compressor sets threshold, ratio and make-up gain together — it stops a vocal or a snare jumping out without you having to think about it.
  • Three-band EQ — 100 Hz shelving, 2.5 kHz peaking mid, 10 kHz shelving, all ±15 dB — plus an 80 Hz high-pass filter on every mono channel.
  • One AUX send and a monitor output, so you can run a stage wedge or an in-ear feed independently of the front-of-house mix.
  • Balanced XLR and TRS stereo out, 2 × 7-segment LED metering, headphone out.
  • 1.9 kg metal chassis, 244 × 71 × 294 mm, external PA-10 adapter supplied.

Reading the MG Model Names

Yamaha's MG names are a code, and once you know it the whole range makes sense at a glance:

  • The number is the channel count — 06, 10, 12, 16, 20.
  • X adds the SPX digital effects processor (reverbs, delays, chorus).
  • U adds a USB audio interface for recording straight to a computer.
  • F means channel faders instead of rotary knobs.
  • K means the reverse — knobs instead of faders, for a shallower, lighter console.

So the MG10 is ten channels, no effects, no USB. The MG10X adds SPX effects; the MG10XU adds effects and USB; the MG10XUF adds effects, USB and faders. Identical preamps and EQ on all four.

FAQ

Q. Should I just buy the MG10X instead?

If any of those four mics is a vocal, yes — the MG10X is the same desk with 24 SPX reverb and delay programmes, and the price gap is small. Buy the plain MG10 only if you already have outboard effects, or if the sources are speech and instruments that need no reverb.

Q. Can it record to a computer?

Not on its own — there is no USB interface. The MG10XU is the same console with one built in, at 24-bit/192 kHz.

Q. Is the mid EQ sweepable?

No — the MG10 series has a fixed 2.5 kHz mid, as does the MG12 family. A sweepable 250 Hz–5 kHz mid appears only on the MG16 and MG20 consoles.

Q. Faders or knobs?

Knobs. Every MG10-series console uses rotary level controls except the MG10XUF, which is the fader version. Knobs are more compact and harder to knock out of position; faders are quicker to ride live.

Q. How many channels can take a microphone?

Four. The three stereo channels are line-level only on this model, so four mics is the hard limit. If you need more, the MG12 takes six and the MG16 takes ten.
