Yamaha Arius YDP-166 Digital Piano

The Yamaha ARIUS YDP-166 is an 88-key home digital piano that pairs the GrandTouch-E keyboard with escapement and the sampled sound of Yamaha's CFX concert grand, played through 20 W × 2 amplifiers and 12 cm speakers with a diffuser grille. Three pedals, VRM Lite resonance and Bluetooth audio/MIDI complete an upright-style console designed for everyday practice.

It is made for beginners who want to build good technique from the start and for players returning to the piano who want a more grand-like touch and richer sound than entry-level models, in a cabinet that fits neatly into a living room or study.

Key Features

GrandTouch-E Keyboard with Escapement

The YDP-166 uses Yamaha's 88-key GrandTouch-E keyboard with synthetic ebony and ivory keytops and escapement. The keys respond consistently at every strength and depth across their 10 mm stroke, even when you play many notes together, so you can shape dynamics much as you would on a grand piano. Four touch settings (Hard, Medium, Soft and Fixed) let you match the response to your hands.

Yamaha CFX Concert Grand Sound

The main piano Voice is sampled from the Yamaha CFX, the company's flagship concert grand, with every note carefully recorded and then adjusted for an even, colourful tone from the bright treble to the deep bass. A maximum polyphony of 192 notes leaves plenty of headroom for sustained passages.

VRM Lite String Resonance

Virtual Resonance Modeling Lite recreates the way the strings of a grand piano vibrate in sympathy with each other. The resonance changes with when you strike the keys and how far you press the pedals, adding depth and a sense of space to your playing.

Three Pedals with Half-Pedal Damper

Like a grand piano, the YDP-166 has damper, sostenuto and soft pedals. The damper supports half-pedalling, so you can control how long notes sustain by how far you press it, an important skill for students working on classical repertoire.

20 W × 2 Amplifiers and Diffuser Grille

Two 20 W amplifiers drive a pair of 12 cm speakers placed behind a diffuser grille that keeps treble notes clear even at a distance. The result is a balanced sound across the keyboard for both the player and anyone listening in the room.

Home-Friendly Cabinet Design

The YDP-166 has a compact upright-style cabinet with soft curves, gently rounded corners, a sliding key cover and a music rest with music braces. Yamaha offers it in Black, Dark Rosewood, White and White Birch finishes to suit different home interiors.

Practice Songs, Recording and Headphone Comfort

There are 303 lesson songs from Beyer, Burgmüller, Czerny and Hanon, plus the 50 pieces from the "50 Classical Music Masterpieces" book, a metronome and a 2-track MIDI recorder. Two headphone jacks allow quiet practice, with Intelligent Acoustic Control adjusting the sound balance to suit the volume and the Stereophonic Optimizer giving a more natural spread of sound in headphones.

10 Voices, Bluetooth and Smart Pianist on the YDP-166

Alongside the CFX piano you get 10 Voices, including electric piano, pipe organ, vibraphone and strings, which can be layered in Dual mode, and a Duo mode is also available. Bluetooth audio and MIDI let you stream music through the piano's speakers and connect to Yamaha's free Smart Pianist app, which shows sheet music for all 353 preset songs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the YDP-166 and the YDP-146?

Both share the Yamaha CFX piano sound, VRM Lite, 192-note polyphony, 10 Voices, 353 preset songs, three pedals and Bluetooth audio/MIDI. The YDP-166 steps up to the GrandTouch-E keyboard with escapement and synthetic ebony and ivory keytops (the YDP-146 has a GHS keyboard with matte black keytops) and has more powerful 20 W × 2 amplifiers instead of 8 W × 2. It weighs 42 kg against 38 kg for the YDP-146.

How does the YDP-166 compare with the YDP-105?

The YDP-105 is the entry ARIUS model, with a GHS keyboard, AWM Stereo Sampling, 64-note polyphony, 6 W × 2 amplifiers and 20 preset songs. The YDP-166 adds the GrandTouch-E keyboard with escapement, Yamaha CFX sampling with VRM Lite, 192-note polyphony, 20 W × 2 amplifiers, 353 preset songs and 2-track MIDI recording.

Should I choose the YDP-166 or the Clavinova CLP-825?

Both have the same 20 W × 2 amplifiers with 12 cm diffuser speakers and 10 Voices. The CLP-825 moves up to the GrandTouch-S keyboard, adds the Bösendorfer Imperial alongside the Yamaha CFX, uses full Virtual Resonance Modeling with Grand Expression Modeling, 256-note polyphony, GrandTouch pedals and binaural CFX sampling for headphones. The YDP-166 delivers escapement keys and CFX sound in a slightly lighter cabinet.

What comes in the box with the YDP-166?

Yamaha India lists the Owner's Manual, the "50 Classical Music Masterpieces" music book and Online Member Product Registration as included with the YDP-166. Headphones such as the HPH-150, HPH-100 or HPH-50 and the FC35 pedal unit are optional extras.

Can I connect the YDP-166 to my phone, tablet or computer?

Yes. Bluetooth audio lets you play music from a phone or tablet through the piano's speakers, and Bluetooth MIDI connects to apps such as Yamaha's Smart Pianist. A USB TO HOST port (Type B) with a 44.1 kHz, 24-bit USB audio interface connects the piano directly to a computer.

Who is the YDP-166 best suited for?

It suits serious students, families and adults returning to the piano who want escapement keys, three pedals and concert-grand sound in a compact home cabinet, without moving up to a Clavinova.
