Yamaha FG820 Solid-Top Acoustic Guitar
The Yamaha FG820 is a full-size steel-string acoustic from the FG/FS800 Series, the current generation of the FG line that Yamaha began in 1966. It pairs a solid spruce top with mahogany back and sides and Yamaha's newly developed scalloped bracing, in the classic Traditional Western body shape.
Yamaha places the FG820 one step above the FG800: the mahogany body gives a warmer, stronger sound, and cream binding on the body and fingerboard gives it a more upgraded look. It is a purely acoustic guitar, well suited to players moving up from a first instrument and to anyone who wants a full, warm voice for strumming, singing and songwriting.

Newly Developed Scalloped Bracing
Yamaha's R&D Division used acoustic analysis and simulation, rather than tradition or guesswork, to design a new scalloped bracing pattern for the FG range. Yamaha says it gives a louder, stronger sound in the low and mid frequencies than conventional bracing. It achieves this while keeping the top board durable.
Solid Spruce Top on the FG820
Like every model in the FG/FS800 Series, the FG820 has a solid spruce top. A solid top responds closely to how hard or softly you play, giving a lively tone with clear note definition. It is one of the main reasons the FG820 stays rewarding as your playing improves.
Mahogany Back and Sides for a Warmer Sound
The back and sides of the FG820 are mahogany, and Yamaha credits this with a warmer, stronger sound than the Nato/Okume used on the FG800. That warmth suits open-chord strumming, singing along and songwriting. The neck is nato, as on the rest of the FG800 range.
Full-Size Traditional Western Body
The FG820 uses Yamaha's Traditional Western shape, measuring 505 mm long, 412 mm wide and 100–118 mm deep, with an overall length of 1038 mm. The large body gives plenty of volume and low-end depth. If you would prefer a smaller guitar, the FS820 uses the same top and back-and-sides woods in a concert-size body.
Cream Binding for an Upgraded Look
Yamaha fits the FG820 with cream binding on both the body and the fingerboard, a visible step up from the black binding of the FG800. It is finished with a black-and-white soundhole inlay and a gloss body. The pickguard is tortoise pattern, except on the Black and Sunset Blue versions, which use a black pickguard.
Five Gloss Finishes for the Yamaha FG820 Acoustic Guitar
YMS offers the FG820 in Autumn Burst, Black, Brown Sunburst, Natural and Sunset Blue, the full set of colours Yamaha India lists for this model. Every version has a gloss body and a matt neck. Apart from the pickguard colour, all five share the same specifications.
Comfortable Neck and 650 mm Scale
The nato neck has a matt finish, a 43 mm (1 11/16") nut and a 400 mm (15 3/4") fingerboard radius. The FG820 uses a 650 mm (25 9/16") scale with 11.0 mm string spacing at the bridge pins. Yamaha lists the fingerboard and bridge as rosewood or walnut.

Yamaha says every FG is built from carefully cured and dried woods, with hand-sprayed finishes and detailed quality-control checks. The FG820 uses die-cast chrome TM29T tuners, a urea nut and saddle, and black ABS bridge pins with white dots. These are simple, durable parts made for years of regular playing.

What is the difference between the FG820 and the FS820?
They use the same solid spruce top and mahogany back and sides. The FG820 has the larger Traditional Western body (412 mm wide, 100–118 mm deep), a 650 mm scale and 11.0 mm string spacing. The FS820 has a smaller, thinner concert body (380 mm wide, 90–110 mm deep), a 634 mm scale and 10.0 mm spacing, which Yamaha suggests for younger players and fingerstyle players.
Does the FG820 have a pickup?
No. The FG820 is purely acoustic, with no electronics. If you need to plug in, the FGX800C is derived from the FG800 and adds a cutaway, an under-saddle piezo pickup and the SYSTEM66 preamp with volume, 3-band EQ, tuner and a line output.
What comes with the FG820?
Yamaha lists a hex wrench as the included accessory, and a case is not listed, so you may want to add a gig bag or case for transport and storage. The guitar comes strung with Yamaha FS50BT or D'Addario EXP11 strings.
