Yamaha FS800 Concert Acoustic Guitar

The Yamaha FS800 is the concert-size model in Yamaha's FG/FS800 Series, pairing a solid spruce top with Nato/Okume back and sides. It shares the series' newly developed scalloped bracing and gloss finish, but in a smaller, slimmer body with a 634 mm (25") scale.

Yamaha recommends the FS800 for beginners and notes that its small, thin body suits younger players and anyone who prefers a more compact guitar, as well as intermediate and advanced fingerstyle players. It is a purely acoustic instrument for lessons, practice, songwriting and playing at home.

Key Features

Solid Spruce Top on the FS800

The FS800 has a solid spruce top, the same top material Yamaha uses across the FG/FS800 Series. A solid top reacts closely to how you play, producing a lively and well-balanced tone. It handles light fingerpicking and full strummed chords equally well.

Newly Developed Scalloped Bracing

Yamaha developed a new scalloped bracing pattern for the FG/FS range using acoustic analysis and simulation from its R&D Division. Compared with conventional bracing, it gives a louder, stronger sound in the low and mid frequencies. The top board keeps its durability at the same time.

Compact Concert Body of the Yamaha FS800

The concert body is 497 mm long, 380 mm wide and 90–110 mm deep, noticeably smaller than the 412 mm-wide FG800. The slimmer profile sits closer to the player, so it stays comfortable through long practice sessions. It is a good fit if a full-size body feels bulky.

25-Inch Scale for an Easier Reach

A 634 mm (25") scale means a slightly shorter stretch between frets than the 650 mm scale of the FG800. The neck has a 43 mm (1 11/16") nut, a 400 mm (15 3/4") fingerboard radius and a smooth matt finish. Bridge-pin spacing of 10.0 mm sets the strings a little closer together than on the FG800.

Nato/Okume Body with Walnut Fingerboard

Nato/Okume back and sides support the solid top, joined to a nato neck. The FS800 uses a walnut fingerboard and walnut bridge, with a urea nut and saddle. Black body binding and a black-and-white soundhole inlay give it a clean, traditional look.

Three Finish Options for the FS800 Concert Acoustic Guitar

YMS offers the FS800 in Natural, Sand Burst and Tinted, each with a gloss body finish and a tortoise-pattern pickguard. All three share the same specifications. Every version is fitted with die-cast chrome TM29T tuners.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I choose the FS800 or the FG800?

Both have a solid spruce top, Nato/Okume back and sides and scalloped bracing. The FS800 has a smaller concert body (380 mm wide, 90–110 mm deep), a 634 mm scale and 10.0 mm string spacing. The FG800 has the larger Traditional Western body (412 mm wide, 100–118 mm deep), a 650 mm scale and 11.0 mm string spacing, so it suits players who want a full-size guitar.

How does the FS800 differ from the FS820?

Both use the concert body, a solid spruce top and scalloped bracing. The FS820 steps up to mahogany back and sides with cream body binding and a rosewood or walnut fingerboard and bridge. The FS800 uses Nato/Okume back and sides, black binding and a walnut fingerboard and bridge.

What is the difference between the FS800 and the FS400?

Both share a concert shape and a 634 mm scale. The FS400 lists a spruce top, locally sourced tonewood back and sides, a matt finish with no binding or pickguard, and covered chrome TM-14P tuners. The FS800 has a solid spruce top, Nato/Okume back and sides, a gloss finish with binding and pickguard, and die-cast chrome TM29T tuners.

Does the FS800 have a pickup?

No. The FS800 is purely acoustic, with no electronics, controls or output jack. If you need to plug in, consider an electro-acoustic model such as the FGX800C, which is based on the full-size FG800.

What comes with the FS800?

Yamaha lists a hex wrench as the included accessory, and no case or gig bag is supplied, so you may want to add one for transport and storage. The guitar is strung with Yamaha FS50BT or D'Addario XT strings from the factory.

Who is the FS800 best suited to?

It suits beginners who want a solid-top guitar, younger players and anyone who finds a full-size acoustic large. Yamaha also points to its small, thin body as a good match for intermediate and advanced fingerstyle players.
