Yamaha FG800 Solid-Top Acoustic Guitar

The Yamaha FG800 is a full-size steel-string acoustic from the FG/FS800 Series, the latest generation of the FG line that Yamaha started in 1966. It combines a solid spruce top with Nato/Okume back and sides and Yamaha's newly developed scalloped bracing, all in the classic Traditional Western body shape.

Yamaha describes the FG800 as its standard acoustic model and recommends it to beginners, yet the solid top and full-size body make it just as useful as a dependable everyday guitar for experienced players. It is a purely acoustic instrument, well suited to strumming, songwriting, lessons and practice at home.

Key Features

Solid Spruce Top on the FG800

The top of the FG800 is solid spruce, the top material Yamaha uses on every model in the FG/FS800 Series. A solid top responds closely to your picking and strumming, giving a lively, balanced tone with clear note definition. It is a big part of why the FG800 stays rewarding to play as your skills grow.

Newly Developed Scalloped Bracing

Yamaha's R&D Division used acoustic analysis and simulation, rather than tradition or guesswork, to arrive at a new scalloped bracing pattern for the FG range. Compared with conventional bracing, it produces a louder, stronger sound in the low and mid frequencies. Crucially, it does this while keeping the top board durable.

Full-Size Traditional Western Body

The FG800 uses Yamaha's Traditional Western shape, measuring 505 mm long, 412 mm wide and 100–118 mm deep. This large body gives generous volume and low-end depth for open-chord strumming and accompanying vocals. If you would rather have a smaller body, the FS800 uses the same top and back-and-sides materials in a concert shape.

Nato/Okume Back and Sides

The back and sides are Nato/Okume, joined to a nato neck. These woods support the solid spruce top with a balanced, straightforward character that suits many styles of music. The body has a gloss finish with black binding and a black-and-white soundhole inlay.

Comfortable FG800 Neck and 650 mm Scale

The nato neck has a matt finish, a 43 mm (1 11/16") nut and a 400 mm (15 3/4") fingerboard radius. It uses a 650 mm (25 9/16") scale with 11.0 mm bridge-pin spacing. Yamaha lists the fingerboard and bridge as rosewood or walnut.

Four Gloss Finishes for the Yamaha FG800 Acoustic Guitar

YMS offers the FG800 in Natural, Black, Brown Sunburst and Sand Burst, all with a gloss body finish. Each has a tortoise-pattern pickguard except the Black version, which uses a black pickguard. Otherwise all four share the same specifications.

Made by Yamaha with Dependable Hardware

Yamaha says every FG is built with carefully cured and dried woods, hand-sprayed finishes and detailed quality-control checks. The FG800 is fitted with die-cast chrome TM29T tuners, a urea nut and saddle, and black ABS bridge pins with white dots. These are straightforward, durable parts designed for years of regular playing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the FG800 different from the FG820 and FG830?

All three share the Traditional Western body, a solid spruce top and scalloped bracing. The FG820 moves to mahogany back and sides with cream body binding, while the FG830 uses rosewood back and sides with an abalone soundhole inlay and a rosewood fingerboard and bridge. The FG800 uses Nato/Okume back and sides with black binding.

Should I choose the FG800 or the FS800?

Both have a solid spruce top, Nato/Okume back and sides and scalloped bracing. The FG800 has the larger Traditional Western body (412 mm wide, 100–118 mm deep), a 650 mm scale and 11.0 mm string spacing. The FS800 has a smaller concert body (380 mm wide, 90–110 mm deep), a 634 mm scale and 10.0 mm string spacing, so it suits players who want a more compact guitar.

How does the FG800 compare with the F370?

Both are full-size steel-string guitars with a 412 mm-wide body. The FG800 adds a solid spruce top, Nato/Okume back and sides, Yamaha's newly developed scalloped bracing and a 650 mm scale. The F370 lists a spruce top with locally sourced tonewood back and sides and a slightly shorter 634 mm scale.

Does the FG800 have a pickup?

No. The FG800 is purely acoustic, with no electronics. If you need to plug in, the FGX800C is derived from the FG800 and adds a cutaway, Yamaha's under-saddle piezo pickup and the System66 preamp with volume, 3-band EQ, tuner and a line output.

What comes with the FG800?

Yamaha lists a hex wrench as the included accessory, and no case or gig bag is supplied, so you may want to add one for transport and storage. The guitar is strung with Yamaha FS50BT or D'Addario EXP11 strings from the factory.

Is the FG800 a good guitar for beginners?

Yes. Yamaha recommends the FG800 for beginner guitarists, and its solid spruce top and full-size body mean it remains a worthwhile instrument as your playing develops.
