The Yamaha PSR-E283 is an entry-level 61-key portable keyboard built around learning and fun. It brings together 410 sounds, 150 accompaniment Styles, 122 built-in Songs with lesson functions and quiz games, all selected directly from category and number buttons.
It is a good fit for children, families and adults starting out on keyboard who want guided practice at home. Duo mode makes it practical for a teacher and student sharing one instrument, and battery operation means it can go wherever you do.

410 Sounds on the PSR-E283
The PSR-E283 offers 392 instrument Voices and 18 Drum/SFX Kits, from pianos, guitars and basses to percussion and drums. Press the PORTABLE GRAND button to call up Yamaha's grand piano Voice instantly, and use the SFX Kit to play fun sound effects such as barking dogs and meowing cats.
Three-Step Lessons with Grading
The 122 built-in Songs work with a three-step lesson system: Listen & Learn, Timing and Waiting. At the end of the Timing and Waiting lessons, the keyboard grades your performance so you can see how you are improving.
Quiz Mode for Ear Training
The Sound Quiz asks you to find and play the sound you hear, while the Memory Quiz challenges you to play back a melody that grows longer with each correct answer. These games make ear training feel like play, which keeps young learners motivated.
Play with a Backing Band
Choose from 150 Styles and play chords with your left hand to get a matching rhythm, bass and chord accompaniment. Smart Chord lets you trigger full chords with a single finger, so even beginners can sound like a complete band.
Direct Control Panel
Voices, Styles and functions are chosen with category and number buttons rather than a dial, which makes the PSR-E283 quick to learn.
Duo Mode for Teacher and Student
Duo mode divides the keyboard into two equal halves, each with its own middle C. A teacher and student, or two family members, can play the same passage side by side on one instrument.
Free Song Book and Phrase Recording
Yamaha's free downloadable Song Book provides scores for the built-in Songs, along with lesson tips, illustrations and a glossary. You can also record a phrase you play as a user Song (approx. 300 notes) and play it back to hear your progress.
Portable Keyboard for Practice Anywhere

Are the keys touch-sensitive?
No. Yamaha's reference manual states the PSR-E283 has no touch response, so volume does not change with playing strength. The Yamaha PSR-E383 and PSR-I300 both have touch-sensitive keys with Soft, Medium and Hard settings.
How does the PSR-E283 differ from the PSR-E383?
The PSR-E383 adds touch response, 48-note polyphony, 650 Voices, 260 Styles, five-Song two-track recording, Keys to Success lessons and USB to Host for MIDI and audio. The PSR-E283 is lighter at 4.0 kg against 4.4 kg and keeps things simpler for first-time players.
Can I connect it to a phone or computer?
There is no USB port, but the AUX IN stereo mini jack lets you play audio from a phone or music player through the speakers. It also has a PHONES/OUTPUT jack and a sustain pedal jack.
Can the PSR-E283 run on batteries?
Yes. It runs on six AA alkaline, manganese or Ni-MH rechargeable batteries, or on a PA-130 AC adaptor or a Yamaha-recommended equivalent.
What is included in the box?
The PSR-E283 comes with a music rest and its AC adaptor, so you can start playing straight away. The Song Book is a free download from Yamaha's website.
