Your First Stage-Ready Dreadnought. Tuner, EQ and Pickup Built In.
The Yamaha FX400 is a full-size dreadnought electro-acoustic built for the point where playing at home turns into playing for other people. A spruce top over locally sourced tonewood back and sides gives the projection and low-end push that strumming and flatpicking need, and the matt finish keeps it looking understated on stage.
Its SYSTEM75 preamp does the work most beginners end up buying separately: an under-saddle piezo pickup, a 4-band EQ for shaping tone at the desk, a built-in chromatic tuner, and a phase switch for taming feedback in loud rooms. Plug into an amp or PA through the LINE OUT jack and you are ready to play.
Key Features
SYSTEM75 preamp with 4-band EQ
An active 4-band equaliser and volume control let you shape the plugged-in sound to the room rather than leaving it to the engineer. Bass, middle, treble and presence are all adjustable from the upper bout while you play.
Built-in chromatic tuner and phase switch
Tune between songs without reaching for a clip-on. The phase switch flips the pickup signal to cancel low-frequency howl when you are standing close to a monitor or an amp — the single most useful control on a loud stage.
Full dreadnought body with spruce top
At 412 mm across the lower bout and up to 116 mm deep, the dreadnought shape delivers the volume and bass response that open strumming and flatpicking rely on. Yamaha pairs the spruce top with locally sourced tonewood back and sides to keep the price accessible.
Narrow 43 mm nut and 10 mm string spacing
The FX400 uses a 43 mm nut width with 10.0 mm string spacing — noticeably tighter than a typical 44 mm acoustic. Combined with the 634 mm (25 in) scale, it makes chord shapes easier to reach for smaller hands and newer players.
Straight into an amp, PA or interface
The LINE OUT end-pin jack takes a standard 6.3 mm instrument cable to an acoustic amp, mixer, PA or audio interface, so the FX400 works equally well at an open mic, a rehearsal or a home recording session.
Clean matt finish in two colours
A matt body and neck, covered chrome tuners, rosewood fingerboard and bridge, and a bindingless, pickguard-free top give the FX400 a stripped-back modern look. Choose Natural Satin with a brown sound-hole inlay, or Smoky Black with a white one.
FAQ
Q. Is the top solid or laminate?
Yamaha lists the FX400 top simply as spruce, not solid spruce. If a solid top is a priority, look at the FG/FS 800 series or the TransAcoustic models instead — we are happy to compare them for you.
Q. Can I play it unplugged?
Yes. It is a normal acoustic guitar first — the electronics only come into play when you connect a cable. The preamp is battery powered and does not affect the unplugged sound.
Q. What does the phase switch actually do?
It inverts the polarity of the pickup signal. When a guitar body starts resonating with a monitor or amp and produces a low howl, flipping the phase usually stops it without having to cut volume or EQ.
Q. How is the FX400 different from the FSX400 and FSX400C?
They share the same SYSTEM75 electronics. FX400 is the full dreadnought for the biggest sound; FSX400 uses a lighter, smaller concert body that suits fingerpicking; FSX400C is the concert body with a cutaway for easier access to the upper frets.
Q. Is it a good first guitar?
It is a good first electro-acoustic. The narrower nut and string spacing help beginners, and the onboard tuner, EQ and pickup mean you will not need to buy those separately once you start playing with others.
Q. Does it come with a case?
Yamaha lists a hex wrench as the included accessory; no case or gig bag is listed. Ask us about a suitable bag or hard case when you order.
