The Yamaha CPX600 is the bigger-bodied half of Yamaha's stage-guitar range. Yamaha describes the CPX as combining “the on-stage prowess of the legendary APX series with a bigger-bodied design for a louder, fuller acoustic sound and a more traditional look”.

That extra size is the whole point. At 400 mm across and 95–115 mm deep, the grand auditorium cutaway body has noticeably more air behind it than a thinline electro-acoustic — so it holds its own unplugged in a room, rather than only coming alive through a PA.

Plugged in, the SYSTEM65 preamp gives you a three-band EQ with a sweepable mid control and a built-in tuner, fed by a piezo pickup with a separate element under each string. A deep cutaway keeps the upper frets reachable. Available in Black, Old Violin Sunburst, Root Beer and Vintage Tint.

Grand auditorium cutaway body — 400 mm wide, up to 115 mm deep

Yamaha's medium-jumbo shape sits between a concert and a dreadnought in width, but it is deep — and depth is where low end comes from. Unplugged it has real body and warmth; plugged in it still sounds like an acoustic guitar rather than a pickup.

Deep cutaway on a big body

The reason to choose a cutaway on a body this size is that you get the volume of a large guitar without losing the top of the neck. Lead lines and higher voicings stay reachable, which is exactly what a big-bodied guitar usually costs you.

SYSTEM65 preamp with tuner and sweepable mid

Volume, three-band EQ, a movable mid-frequency control and a built-in chromatic tuner, all in a side-mounted panel you can reach while playing. Plug straight into an amp or PA and shape the sound at the guitar.

Spruce top with non-scalloped X bracing

Yamaha specifies a spruce top over “non-scalloped X-type bracing”. Leaving the braces unscalloped keeps the top stiffer and more controlled — which is the right call on a guitar built to be amplified, because a stiffer top is less prone to booming and feeding back at stage volume.

634 mm scale, 43 mm nut, rosewood fingerboard

A standard full-size 634 mm scale with a 43 mm nut and R400 mm fingerboard radius. The 10.0 mm string spacing is slightly tighter than Yamaha's L Series, which suits chord work and makes the neck feel quick under the hand.

Q. Does the CPX600 have a solid top?

No. Yamaha's specification lists the top as “Spruce” rather than solid spruce, so it is a laminate top — some retailers get this wrong. That is normal at this price, and it is not a bad thing on a stage guitar: a laminate top is far more stable in changing humidity and less prone to feeding back at volume. If an all-solid or solid-top instrument is what you want, talk to us about the L Series instead.

Q. Is it a medium jumbo or a grand auditorium?

Both terms are Yamaha's. The specification sheet calls the shape “grand auditorium cutaway style”, while Yamaha's own product literature describes the CPX as a “medium-jumbo body”. In practical terms it is 400 mm wide and unusually deep — bigger and fuller than a concert guitar, a little narrower than a dreadnought.

Q. What does the mid frequency control actually do?

A normal mid knob boosts or cuts a fixed band. The mid frequency control lets you move that band up or down the spectrum first, then cut or boost it. When a room is making the guitar sound boxy, or a particular note is ringing out and feeding back, you can hunt down that frequency and pull it out instead of dulling the whole guitar.

Q. Does it need a battery?

Yes — the SYSTEM65 preamp is active, so it runs on a battery in the control panel. It is only drawing power when a lead is plugged into the jack, so unplug the cable when you finish playing and the battery lasts a long time.

Q. Is a case or gig bag included?

Q. Is this a good first guitar?

It is a good first serious guitar. The neck is comfortable and the setup is forgiving, but the real value is that you will not outgrow it the moment you start playing to an audience — the electronics are genuinely giggable. If you only ever play at home, a plain acoustic will give you more guitar for the money.

Q. Which colour should I pick?

They are identical instruments, so it is purely taste. Vintage Tint shows the spruce grain with contrasting darker sides; Old Violin Sunburst is the classic warm burst; Root Beer is a deep translucent red-brown; Black is the most understated on a dark stage. All four are gloss.

Q. How do I stop it feeding back on stage?

A deep-bodied acoustic will feed back if you push it. Start by rolling the bass back a little, then use the mid frequency control to find and cut the offending note. Standing away from the monitors helps, and a soundhole feedback buster is an inexpensive fix if you play loud rooms regularly — ask us and we will sort one out.
