The Yamaha CSF1M is a parlour guitar built to be carried. Yamaha describes the CSF series as combining “the portability of a travel guitar with the focused tonal characteristics of a parlor guitar” — a small instrument that still sounds like a real one, not a novelty.

It is built around a solid Sitka spruce top over mahogany back and sides, with a short 600 mm scale and a 43 mm nut. The short scale drops string tension noticeably, so chords take less effort and bends come easier — part of why this guitar tends to end up on the sofa rather than in the case.

A newly designed scalloped, forward-shifted bracing pattern is what makes the sound bigger than the body suggests, and a passive piezo pickup with a sensor under each string lets you plug in without a battery or a control panel cut into the side. Scalloped, Forward-Shifted Bracing

A small body moves less air, so a parlour guitar usually trades volume and low end for portability. Yamaha's answer on the CSF was not a bigger box — it was redesigning the braces underneath the top so that a small top behaves like a larger one.

Parlour body — 450 mm long, 85–105 mm deep

Small enough to keep within arm's reach and to travel with, shallow enough to sit comfortably against you. The focused parlour voice is punchy and mid-forward, which is exactly why these bodies record so well and cut through in a room.

Solid Sitka spruce top — not a laminate top

The top is the part that makes the sound, and this one is solid wood. Sitka is stiff and strong with a wide dynamic range, and unlike a laminate top it will keep opening up and improving for as long as you play it.

600 mm short scale — less tension, easier under the hand

At 600 mm the CSF1M is around 50 mm shorter in scale than a full-size Yamaha acoustic. Frets sit closer together and the strings pull under less tension at pitch, so barre chords and bends take less hand strength. Ideal for smaller hands, younger players, or anyone whose fingers give out on a dreadnought.

Passive piezo pickup — no battery, no control panel

Yamaha fits a passive under-saddle system with an “individual sensor under each string” and a plain line output. There is no preamp box routed into the side, no battery to die mid-set and no controls to knock — the guitar keeps its clean lines and you set your level at the amp, mixer or an outboard preamp/DI.

Nato neck with rosewood fingerboard and R400 radius

A 43 mm nut and 11.0 mm string spacing keep the feel conventional rather than cramped, and the R400 mm fingerboard radius gives a gentle curve that suits both chording and single lines.

Understated appointments, matte finish

Rosewood bridge, black and white body binding, die-cast chrome tuners and black ABS bridge pins with white dots. The matte finish keeps the whole guitar low-key and hides handling marks far better than a gloss body — sensible on a guitar meant to be carried around.

Elixir strings and a padded gig bag included

Fitted with Elixir NANOWEB 80/20 Bronze Light strings, and supplied with a hex wrench and a padded fabric gig bag with backpack straps and a zipped front pocket. It is a stiffened fabric bag rather than a moulded hard case — good protection for carrying the guitar about, which is what this instrument is for.

Q. Is the CSF1M all solid wood?

No — the top is solid Sitka spruce, and the back and sides are layered mahogany rather than solid. The top is the panel that does most of the tonal work, so a solid top is where the money matters most at this price. Layered back and sides also stand up better to humidity swings, which is a genuine advantage in the Indian climate.

Q. Is this a travel guitar or a real guitar?

Both, and that is the point of the design. It is small and light enough to travel with, but it is a properly braced solid-top instrument with a pickup fitted — not a scaled-down student guitar. Plenty of players buy one as a second guitar and end up playing it most.

Q. Where are the volume and tone controls?

There aren't any. The pickup system is passive, so there is no preamp, no battery compartment and no control panel cut into the side. You plug into the output jack and set your level at the amp, mixer or an acoustic preamp/DI.

Q. Do I need anything extra to gig with it?

Most acoustic amps and PA channels will take a passive pickup directly. If you want EQ and a notch filter on stage, a small acoustic preamp or DI is the usual pairing. Ask us and we will match one to your setup.

Q. Is the short scale good for beginners and smaller hands?

Yes, and it is one of the better reasons to choose this guitar. The 600 mm scale puts the frets closer together and lowers string tension at pitch, so fretting takes less effort. It is a common recommendation for younger players, smaller hands, or anyone returning to guitar after a break.

Q. Does the short scale change the tuning?

No. It is tuned to standard pitch like any other guitar, and it ships with Elixir Light strings chosen to suit the scale. You do not need to transpose or use a capo to play with everyone else.

Q. Which finish should I choose?

Purely a matter of taste — the two are identical instruments. Vintage Natural shows the spruce grain of the top clearly; Tobacco Brown Sunburst is darker and warmer-looking. Both are matte rather than gloss.
