Yamaha FX400 Electro-Acoustic Guitar
The Yamaha FX400 is the electro-acoustic version of Yamaha's F400 dreadnought. It keeps the same full-size body, spruce top and pared-back matt styling, and adds Yamaha's SYSTEM75 pickup system with an active 4-band EQ, a chromatic tuner and a phase switch, with a LINE OUT jack for connecting to an amp or PA.
It is aimed at players who have moved past the bedroom stage and want to perform, whether that means an open mic, a college band, a church or school stage, or recording at home. Yamaha's comfort-focused neck dimensions also make it an easy guitar to live with for everyday practice.
Key Features
SYSTEM75 preamp with active 4-band EQ
The FX400 carries Yamaha's SYSTEM75 electronics, combining a piezo pickup with an active preamp. Volume and four EQ bands sit on the guitar itself, so you can adjust bass, mids and treble to suit the room instead of relying entirely on the sound desk.
Built-in chromatic tuner
A chromatic tuner is part of the preamp, so you can check your tuning between songs without a separate clip-on tuner. It is one less accessory to carry and one less thing to forget before a gig.
Phase switch for feedback control
Acoustic guitars played loud through monitors can start to howl. The FX400's phase switch flips the pickup signal, which Yamaha notes is effective when feedback becomes a problem, giving you a quick fix on stage.

Yamaha FX400 dreadnought body
The FX400 uses Yamaha's dreadnought-style body, 412 mm wide and 96-116 mm deep, topped with spruce. Yamaha pitches it for flatpicking and strumming, where a large body delivers a full, resonant acoustic sound even before you plug in.
Comfortable 25 in scale and narrower string spacing
With a 634 mm (25 in) scale, a 43 mm nut and 10.0 mm string spacing at the bridge, the FX400 is set up for comfort. The tighter layout helps with chord shapes and makes the neck feel approachable for developing players.

Matt finish with an ultra-thin coat
Yamaha finishes the FX400 body and neck in matt using an ultra-thin polyurethane coat, intended to let the wood resonate freely and let you feel its texture. With no binding or pickguard, the look is simple and modern.

Spruce top with locally sourced tonewood
The top is spruce, while the back, sides and neck use locally sourced tonewoods that Yamaha selects by availability to reduce waste. A rosewood fingerboard and bridge, urea nut and saddle, and covered chrome tuners complete the build.
Yamaha FX400 LINE OUT for stage and studio
A single LINE OUT jack sends the FX400's signal to an acoustic amp, mixer, PA or audio interface using a standard instrument cable. That makes the same guitar useful for rehearsals, live shows and home recording.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the Yamaha FX400 and the F400?
Yamaha India lists the same body shape, dimensions, woods and matt finish for both. The F400 is purely acoustic with no electronics, while the FX400 adds the SYSTEM75 pickup system with volume, 4-band EQ, a tuner, a phase switch and a LINE OUT jack.
How does the FX400 compare with the Yamaha FX280?
Both are full-size electro-acoustics. Yamaha presents the FX280 as a beginner electro-acoustic built around its A.R.T. pickup and made in India, while the FX400 uses SYSTEM75 with a 4-band EQ, built-in tuner and phase switch, plus a modern matt finish, making it the better fit if you plan to perform regularly.
Is the top of the FX400 solid spruce?
Yamaha lists the FX400 top simply as spruce and does not describe it as solid. The back, sides and neck are locally sourced tonewoods.
What comes in the box with the FX400?
Yamaha lists a hex wrench as the included accessory and does not list a case, so plan for a gig bag or case separately if you will be travelling with it.
Who is the FX400 best suited to?
It suits players ready to start performing, such as students joining a band, worship and school musicians, open-mic performers and home recordists who want a full-size acoustic with useful onboard controls.
