The Quietest Way to Start Drumming at Home
Most people who give up on drums at home give up because of the noise. Not the sound in the headphones — the thump of a beater and the shudder that travels down a concrete slab. The DTX402K is Yamaha's answer to exactly that problem, and it is the reason this kit exists alongside the DTX432K and DTX452K rather than simply being the cheap one.
Everything that makes the sound is identical across all three kits: the same DTX402 module, the same 287 drum and percussion voices, the same ten kits, the same ten training functions. What the DTX402K trades away is at your feet.

What You Get
- The full DTX402 module — ten drum kits, every one of them editable and overwritable, drawn from 287 drum and percussion voices plus 128 keyboard voices. This is the same module fitted to the DTX432K and DTX452K; nothing about the sound is cut down.
- KU100 silent kick unit. Yamaha designed it specifically to reduce the physical noise of playing a bass drum and, in particular, the vibration carried to the space below you. It senses how hard you play, so dynamics still come through.
- HH40 hi-hat controller — open, closed, foot-close and foot-splash sounds from a very quiet pedal. It does not produce half-open hi-hat, and it does not vary foot-close volume with how hard you press.
- Pads: 7.5-inch snare, three 7.5-inch toms, a 10-inch hi-hat pad, a 10-inch crash that responds to choking, and a 10-inch ride.
- Ten built-in training functions, including Rhythm Gate for timing, Dynamic Gate for stick control, Song Part Gate, Measure Break, Change Up, Part Mute, Fast Blast for speed and a Recorder — with spoken guidance from the module and a score at the end so you can see whether you actually improved.
- Ten preset songs across Pops, Rock, Metal, Funk, Hip-hop, EDM, Jazz and Latin, supervised by drummer Keiichi Nagata, with a free Yamaha "Drum Score & Instruction" PDF covering grip, posture and how to play each one.
- Click from 30 to 300 BPM, time signatures from 1/4 to 9/4, tap tempo and spoken voice guidance.
- USB TO HOST (type B) carries both audio and MIDI to a phone, tablet or computer — for the free DTX402 Touch app, for Rec'n'Share, or for any DAW.
- AUX IN on a 3.5 mm stereo jack to play along with anything, and PHONES/OUTPUT on a full-size 1/4-inch stereo jack.
- Folding steel rack, 13.9 kg total, with heights adjustable low enough for a child. Drum key, nine-channel snake cable, two cable bands, owner's manual and PA-130 power adaptor supplied.
Is the DTX402K the Right One for You?
Buy it if...
You live in a flat with people below you, you are buying a first kit for a child or a complete beginner, or the kit has to be light enough to move and fold away. On noise alone, nothing else in the range comes close.
Think again if...
You expect to sit behind an acoustic kit one day — at a school, a studio, a church or a rehearsal room. Bass drum technique is built by a foot on a pedal, and the KU100 does not give you that. If that matters, the DTX432K is the kit to buy and the pedal is the reason.
And know this before you order
The DTX402K cannot take a double pedal. The KP65 kick pad on the DTX432K and DTX452K is twin-pedal compatible; the KU100 is not. If double kick is anywhere in your plans, start higher up.

What Is Not in the Box
Worth knowing before you order, because none of these are included with any electronic kit:
- A drum throne. Not optional — posture is most of technique, and a dining chair is the wrong height.
- Sticks. 5A is the usual starting size.
- Headphones. The whole point of a quiet kit is lost without them, and the module's output is a full-size 1/4-inch jack.
- A drum monitor or amplifier, if more than one person needs to hear it.

FAQ
Q. How quiet is it really?
Quiet, not silent. The pads are rubber, so you still hear stick-on-rubber in the room — roughly the level of someone typing hard. The part that travels through a building is the kick, and that is exactly what the KU100 is built to reduce. Put the kit on a rug or a foam mat and most neighbour complaints go away.
Q. Can I add a normal kick pedal later?
The module has a KICK/PAD input, so you could later buy a KP65 pad and an FP6110A pedal and plug them in. But buying those two separately costs more than the difference between this kit and the DTX432K, which comes with both. If you think a pedal is in your future, buy the DTX432K now.
Q. Is it suitable for a young child?
Yes — this is the kit in the range we most often recommend for under-tens. The rack heights adjust low, it is the lightest of the three at 13.9 kg, and there is no pedal for small legs to fight with. The spoken training functions work well without an adult sitting alongside.
Q. Will it connect to my phone or laptop?
Yes. A single USB cable to the USB TO HOST port carries audio and MIDI both ways. On a phone you will need a Lightning-to-USB adapter for an iPhone or iPad, or an OTG cable for Android. That gets you the free DTX402 Touch app for editing kits and running the training modes, Rec'n'Share for playing along and filming, or any DAW on a computer.
Q. Does it sound worse than the DTX432K or DTX452K?
No. The module, the voices, the kits and the training functions are identical across all three. The differences are entirely mechanical — kick, pedal, hi-hat controller and snare pad.
Q. How much space does it need?
About 800 x 1000 mm of floor, plus room for a stool behind it. The rack folds, so it can be stood against a wall between practice sessions.
