Yamaha THR5A Acoustic Guitar Amplifier

The Yamaha THR5A is a 10-watt stereo desktop amplifier made for electro-acoustic guitars and Yamaha Silent Guitars. Instead of conventional amp voicings, it simulates classic condenser, dynamic and tube microphones and adds studio-style effects, giving a plugged-in acoustic the open character of a recorded guitar.

It is aimed at acoustic players who want a natural sound for home practice, songwriting, recording and travel. A tuner, USB audio, an AUX input and the option of battery power make it a complete small setup in a 2.0 kg cabinet.

Microphone Simulations on the THR5A

The Mic Type selector offers Condenser, Dynamic and Tube settings, each simulating a different style of microphone placed in front of your guitar. Dynamic gives a tight, focused core, while Condenser and Tube aim for a clear, natural studio tone.

Nylon and EG Clean Modes

The Nylon setting is voiced for electro-acoustic classical and nylon-string guitars. EG CLN switches to a classic American-style clean valve amp sound with late break-up, so you can also plug in an electric guitar.

Blend/Gain Control

Marked from Direct to Mic on the panel, the Blend/Gain knob sets how the simulated microphone sound sits against your guitar’s direct signal. Together with the Master and Tone controls, it helps you match the amp to your instrument.

Compressor, Chorus, Delay and Reverb

The Effect knob selects compressor, compressor with chorus or chorus, and the separate DLY/REV knob offers delay, delay with reverb or hall reverb. With the THR Editor software on a computer you can also use flanger, phaser, tremolo, spring reverb and a noise gate.

Wide Stereo Sound

Two 8 cm full-range speakers with 5 W per side deliver hi-fi style sound for both your guitar and music playback. Yamaha’s Extended Stereo Technology spreads the image wider than the cabinet, adding depth to reverbs and backing tracks.

Compact Acoustic Amp with Classic Styling

At 271 mm wide and 2.0 kg, the THR5A fits on a desk or shelf and is easy to carry by its top handle. Tap the Tap/Tuner button to set delay time, or hold it for the built-in chromatic tuner.

USB Recording with Cubase AI

A USB connection lets you record the THR5A on a computer and play stereo audio back through its speakers. Steinberg Cubase AI recording software is bundled, so you can capture song ideas straight away.

AC or Battery Power

Run it from the supplied AC adaptor or from AA batteries for playing away from a socket. Yamaha quotes about 6 hours on alkaline batteries or about 7 hours on nickel-metal hydride batteries, depending on usage and conditions.

Which guitars is the THR5A designed for?

Yamaha optimised it for electro-acoustic guitars and Silent Guitars. The Nylon mode suits electro-acoustic classical guitars, and the EG CLN setting gives a clean sound for electric guitar.

Can I connect a microphone to the THR5A?

No. Its only instrument input is a standard mono phone jack for your guitar. The Condenser, Dynamic and Tube settings simulate the sound of microphones on your guitar’s pickup signal; they are not microphone inputs.

How is the THR5A different from the THR5?

Both have the same size and weight, 10 W stereo output, connections and power options. The THR5 is for electric guitar with five amp models from clean to high gain, while the THR5A replaces these with microphone simulations and acoustic-friendly effects such as a compressor.

How does the THR5A compare with the THR10II?

The THR10II is an electric-guitar amp with 20 W of output, Bluetooth audio and MIDI, three-band EQ and user memories. It offers one acoustic model (plus two more through Yamaha’s app), whereas the THR5A is built around acoustic sounds with three mic simulations and a Nylon mode.

Does the THR5A have Bluetooth?

No. Yamaha lists INPUT, PHONES, AUX IN and USB as its connections, with no Bluetooth. Play music from a phone through the stereo mini AUX IN jack, or from a computer over USB.

What is included in the box?

Yamaha lists an AC adaptor, USB cable, stereo mini cable, Owner’s Manual and a Cubase AI Download Information Sheet. Batteries are not listed among the accessories.
