Yamaha THR5 Desktop Guitar Amplifier
The Yamaha THR5 is a compact 10-watt stereo desktop amplifier for electric guitar. It pairs five amp models built with Yamaha’s Virtual Circuitry Modeling (VCM) with two independent effects sections, a built-in tuner and USB audio, all in a 2.0 kg cabinet that runs on mains or batteries.
Yamaha designed the THR series for the playing you do away from the stage: practising at home, writing songs, recording ideas or jamming while travelling. Its stereo speakers also make it a capable little system for playing along with music from a phone or computer.
Key Features
Five VCM Amp Models on the THR5
Turn the Amp knob to choose Clean, Crunch, Lead, Brit Hi or Modern. Yamaha models each on a classic valve design, from a 6L6 clean sound that breaks up early to an EL84 class-A crunch, EL34-based lead and British high-gain voices, and a smooth ultra-high-gain Modern setting.
Virtual Circuitry Modeling
VCM recreates the behaviour of analogue circuits at a detailed level rather than simply imitating their sound. Yamaha uses it on the THR to deliver an authentic valve-amp sound with realistic effects.
Dual Effects Sections
The Effect knob offers chorus, flanger, phaser or tremolo, while the separate DLY/REV knob covers delay, delay with reverb, spring reverb and hall reverb. Because the two sections work independently, you can run a modulation effect and an ambience effect together.
Hi-Fi Stereo Sound from Two Speakers
The THR5 was developed with Yamaha’s audio division and drives two 8 cm full-range speakers with 5 W per side. The enclosure is designed to handle both guitar tone and music playback, so backing tracks sound clear as well as your guitar.
Extended Stereo Technology
Yamaha’s Extended Stereo Technology widens the stereo image beyond the size of the cabinet. Reverbs and stereo backing tracks gain a sense of space you would not expect from such a small desktop amplifier.
USB Recording with Cubase AI
Connect the THR5 to a computer over USB to record your guitar and to play stereo audio back through the amp. Cubase AI recording software from Steinberg is bundled, and the THR Editor, a download from Yamaha, gives deeper control of amp and effect settings, adding a compressor and noise gate.
Tap Tempo and Chromatic Tuner
Tap the Tap/Tuner button in time with the music to set the delay time, or hold it to open the built-in chromatic tuner. The tuner readout sits on the top panel next to the button.
AC or Battery Power
Use the supplied AC adaptor at home, or fit AA batteries to play anywhere. Yamaha quotes about 6 hours on alkaline batteries or about 7 hours on nickel-metal hydride batteries, depending on usage and conditions.

Who is the Yamaha THR5 designed for?
It suits electric guitarists who want good tone at home and on the move: practice, songwriting, recording into a computer and casual jamming. It is a desktop amplifier with 10 W of stereo output, not a stage or band amplifier.
How does the THR5 compare with the THR10II?
The THR10II doubles the output to 20 W (10 W + 10 W), adds Bluetooth audio and MIDI, a three-band Bass, Middle and Treble EQ, five User Memory buttons and extra amp models through Yamaha’s app. The THR5 is smaller and lighter at 2.0 kg against 3.0 kg, with a single Tone control.
Should I choose the THR5 or the THR5A?
Choose the THR5 for electric guitar, as its five amp models range from clean to high gain. The THR5A is voiced for electro-acoustic and Silent Guitars, with condenser, dynamic and tube microphone simulations, a Nylon mode and one clean electric-guitar setting.
Can I play along with songs from my phone or computer?
Yes. Connect a phone or other player to the stereo mini AUX IN jack, or play audio from a computer over USB. The music plays through the THR5’s stereo speakers alongside your guitar, and you can also listen privately through the PHONES jack.
Does the THR5 have Bluetooth?
No. Yamaha lists INPUT, PHONES, AUX IN and USB as its connections, with no Bluetooth. If wireless audio streaming matters to you, the THR10II includes Bluetooth.
What is included in the box?
Yamaha lists an AC adaptor, USB cable, stereo mini cable, Owner’s Manual and a Cubase AI Download Information Sheet. Batteries are not listed among the accessories.
