Yamaha Recording Custom RBS1455 Birch Snare Drum (14 × 5.5")
The RBS1455 is the 14 × 5.5-inch model in Yamaha’s Recording Custom wood snare drums, built to match the Recording Custom series. It has a 6-ply, 6.0 mm, 100% birch shell, Yamaha’s modern one-piece lugs with an internal lug lock, 1.6 mm steel triple-flange hoops and a heavy-duty Q-type strainer.
It suits drummers who want a professional wood snare for recording, rehearsal and live work, and players adding a matching snare to a Recording Custom kit. Yamaha points to birch as widely considered an ideal choice for recording, thanks to its punch and clearly defined strokes.
Key Features
6-ply, 6.0 mm, 100% Birch Shell
The RBS1455 shell is made entirely of birch in six plies, 6.0 mm thick. Yamaha chose birch for its punchy power and because it helps reduce unwanted noise and interference when drums are set up side by side, so each stroke comes through clearly delineated.
One-piece Lugs with Internal Lug Lock
The updated one-piece lugs keep the traditional look of the Recording Custom while modernising the design. Yamaha says these high-tension lugs give the core sound optimum sustain for a crisp, articulate tone, and an internal lug lock mechanism is built in.
Heavy-duty Q-type Strainer
The release side uses Yamaha’s heavy-duty Q-type strainer, which is robust yet solid, stable and smooth in operation, with easy adjustment and snare-wire replacement. It is paired with a DC3-type butt side.
1.6 mm Steel Triple-flange Hoops
The RBS1455 uses 1.6 mm steel triple-flange hoops with 10 holes, the same hoop specification Yamaha uses on the deeper 14 × 8-inch RBS1480 in the Recording Custom wood snare range. Each tension point is anchored by a one-piece lug.
30-degree / R1.5 Bearing Edges and 2.7 mm Snare Bed
Yamaha cuts the RBS1455’s bearing edges to 30 degrees with an R1.5 profile and gives the shell a 2.7 mm snare bed. A 25-strand SN1425H high-carbon steel snare wire is fitted as standard.
Yamaha Remo Ambassador Heads Fitted
The snare is supplied with a Yamaha Remo Ambassador Coated batter head and a Yamaha Remo Ambassador Snare resonant head, so it is ready to tune and play straight away.
Recording Custom Wood Snare Finishes
Yamaha offers the RBS1455 in Solid Black, Classic Walnut, Surf Green, Real Wood, Red Autumn and Polar White. YMS lists it in Real Wood and Solid Black; the specification is the same whichever finish you choose.

How does the RBS1455 compare with the Recording Custom metal snares?
The metal Recording Custom snares (aluminium RAS, brass RRS and stainless-steel RLS) use a 1.2 mm metal shell with an outward centre bead, 45-degree bearing edges, a 2.4 mm snare bed and Remo US Ambassador heads, and the 14 × 5.5-inch metal models include a bundled Steve Gadd 10-strand wire. The RBS1455 instead has a 6-ply, 6.0 mm birch shell, 30-degree/R1.5 edges, a 2.7 mm snare bed and 1.6 mm triple-flange hoops. All share the one-piece lugs with internal lug lock and the Q-type strainer.
How is it different from the Live Custom Hybrid Oak LHS1455?
Both are 14 × 5.5-inch snares with a Q-type strainer, DC3 butt side, 2.7 mm snare bed and 25-strand SN1425H wire. The LHS1455 has a 7-ply, 7.3 mm oak and phenolic-sheet hybrid shell, 2.3 mm steel Dyna Hoops, Absolute lugs and 45-degree/R1.5 edges, while the RBS1455 has a 6-ply, 6.0 mm birch shell, 1.6 mm triple-flange hoops, one-piece lugs and 30-degree/R1.5 edges.
Should I choose the RBS1455 or the Stage Custom Steel snare?
The Stage Custom Steel SSS1455 is a 14 × 5.5-inch steel snare with a 1.0 mm shell, 1.5 mm triple-flange hoops, a B-type strainer and a 20-strand wire. Choose the RBS1455 if you want a birch wood shell with the Recording Custom one-piece lugs, internal lug lock and heavy-duty Q-type strainer.
Does the finish change the sound or specification?
No. Real Wood and Solid Black share the same shell, edges, hoops, lugs, strainer, wire and heads; only the finish differs.
What comes with the drum?
The RBS1455 comes with its Yamaha Remo Ambassador Coated batter and Ambassador Snare resonant heads and SN1425H snare wire fitted. A snare stand, sticks and a case are not included.
