Yamaha Recording Custom RRS1455 / RRS1465 / RRS1365 Brass Snare Drum
The Recording Custom brass snares belong to the metal snare line-up Yamaha added to its Recording Custom series, developed with extensive input from Steve Gadd. Every model combines a 1.2 mm brass shell and outward centre bead with 2.3 mm steel Dyna Hoops and a heavy-duty Q-type strainer, in three sizes: 14 × 5.5-inch RRS1455, 14 × 6.5-inch RRS1465 and 13 × 6.5-inch RRS1365.
They are made for drummers who want a professional metal snare with consistent, articulate response for the studio or the stage. The RRS1455 adds a bundled second snare wire, the RRS1465 offers a deeper 14-inch shell with a 25-strand wire, and the RRS1365 is the only 13-inch Recording Custom metal snare.
Key Features
Steve Gadd Signature Snare Wire (RRS1455)
The RRS1455 is fitted with a 20-strand SN1420H high-carbon steel snare wire and also comes with the SN1410H, the SG-type wire that Steve Gadd prefers. It is a 14-strand wire with the four middle strands removed, which sharpens the cut-off of each note for a crisper, staccato sound. The RRS1465 uses a 25-strand SN1425H wire and the 13-inch RRS1365 a 20-strand SN1320H wire.
Outward Centre Bead
Yamaha has traditionally formed the centre bead of its metal snare shells on the inside. On the Recording Custom brass snares, refined through repeated evaluations by Steve Gadd, the bead is formed on the outside of the shell, which Yamaha says gives a more open sound than its conventional drums, with crisp, articulate response.
Heavy-duty Q-type Strainer
The release side uses Yamaha’s heavy-duty Q-type strainer, built to be robust while operating solidly, stably and smoothly. It makes tension adjustment and snare-wire replacement straightforward, which is handy on the RRS1455 when you switch between its two wires. The butt side uses a DC3-type unit.
1.2 mm Brass Snare Drum Shell
All three sizes use a 1.2 mm brass shell with 45-degree bearing edges and a 2.4 mm snare bed. Beyond diameter and depth, they differ only in snare wire, hoop tension count and whether the Gadd wire is bundled.
2.3 mm Steel Dyna Hoops
Yamaha describes its thicker 2.3 mm steel Dyna Hoops as giving a tighter sound and sharper response. The 14-inch RRS1455 and RRS1465 have 10 tension points and the 13-inch RRS1365 has 8, each tensioned through Yamaha’s one-piece lugs with an internal lug lock mechanism.
Remo US Ambassador Heads Fitted
Each drum is supplied with a Remo US Ambassador Coated batter head and a Remo US Ambassador Snare resonant head, so it is ready to tune and play out of the box.

The brass models sit alongside the Recording Custom aluminium and stainless-steel snares and the Recording Custom birch wood snare. All the metal versions share the 1.2 mm shell thickness, outward centre bead, Q-type strainer and 45-degree edges, so the choice comes down to shell metal, hoop type and size.

What is the difference between the RRS1455, RRS1465 and RRS1365?
All share the 1.2 mm brass shell, 2.3 mm Dyna Hoops, lugs, strainer, heads, 45-degree edges and 2.4 mm snare bed. The RRS1455 (14 × 5.5") has 10 tension points, a 20-strand SN1420H wire and the bundled SN1410H Steve Gadd wire. The RRS1465 (14 × 6.5") has 10 tension points and a 25-strand SN1425H wire. The RRS1365 (13 × 6.5") has 8 tension points and a 20-strand SN1320H wire.
How does it compare with the Recording Custom aluminium and stainless-steel snares?
All three metal ranges share the 1.2 mm shell thickness, outward centre bead, one-piece lugs, Q-type strainer, Remo US Ambassador heads and 45-degree edges. The stainless-steel models (RLS1455, RLS1470) also use 2.3 mm Dyna Hoops, while the aluminium models (RAS1455, RAS1465) use 3.0 mm aluminium die-cast hoops. Brass is the only range with a 13-inch option.
How is it different from the Stage Custom Steel snare?
The Stage Custom Steel SSS1455 and SSS1465 use a 1.0 mm steel shell, 1.5 mm steel triple-flange hoops, a B-type strainer, a 1.8 mm snare bed and a 20-strand wire on both sizes. The RRS models step up to a 1.2 mm brass shell, 2.3 mm Dyna Hoops, lugs with internal lug lock, the heavy-duty Q-type strainer and, on the RRS1455, the bundled Gadd wire.
How does it compare with the Recording Custom RBS1455 birch snare?
The RBS1455 is the wood-shell Recording Custom snare: 14 × 5.5 inches, with a 6-ply, 6.0 mm birch shell, 1.6 mm steel triple-flange hoops, 30-degree/R1.5 bearing edges, a 2.7 mm snare bed and a 25-strand SN1425H wire. It shares the one-piece lugs with internal lug lock and the Q-type strainer, but has no outward centre bead or bundled Gadd wire.
What comes with the drum?
The snare comes with its Remo US Ambassador Coated batter and Ambassador Snare resonant heads fitted, and the RRS1455 also includes the bundled SN1410H SG-type snare wire. A snare stand, sticks and a case are not included.
