Yamaha MG20XU 20-Channel Analog Mixer with Effects and USB
The Yamaha MG20XU is the largest console in the MG range: a 20-channel analog mixer with up to sixteen D-PRE mic inputs, four groups, four AUX sends, SPX effects and a USB audio interface. It brings big-band capacity to a desk that is still simple to learn.
It is built for churches, auditoriums, schools, rental companies and bands with full drum kits, choirs or panels of speakers. The rack-mount kit and Cubase AI download access come included.
Key Features
Sixteen D-PRE Mic Inputs on the MG20XU
Channels 1-12 have balanced combo jacks, and channels 13/14 to 19/20 each add an XLR mic input to their line jacks, for up to sixteen microphones. All mic inputs use Yamaha's discrete Class-A D-PRE preamps with an inverted Darlington circuit, with +48V phantom power for condenser mics.
Mono/Stereo Channels for Mics or Line Sources
Channels 13/14 and 15/16 take line signals on phone jacks, and 17/18 and 19/20 on RCA jacks, each usable in mono or stereo. That lets you switch between extra microphones and keyboards or playback devices as each event demands.
Four Groups and Four AUX Sends
Four group buses with GROUP OUT jacks let you sub-mix drums, vocals or instruments, or feed separate zones and recorders. Four AUX sends cover monitor mixes and external processing, and AUX 1 and AUX 2 have PRE switches for pre- or post-fader sends.
SPX Effects with 24 Programmes
The built-in SPX processor offers 24 programmes, from halls, rooms and plate reverbs to delays, vocal echo, chorus, flanger and pitch change. The PARAMETER knob fine-tunes each programme, AUX 4 doubles as the effects send, and an optional FC5 foot switch turns the effect on and off.
24-bit/192 kHz USB Audio Interface and Cubase AI
The USB 2.0 port sends the stereo bus to a computer and returns playback to channels 19/20 via the LINE/USB switch, at up to 24-bit/192 kHz. Download access to Steinberg's Cubase AI is included for recording and editing, and Yamaha states it works with iPad (2 or later) through Apple's camera adapter.
Sweepable Mid EQ and 1-Knob Compressors
Channels 1-12 have three-band EQ with a mid band that sweeps from 250 Hz to 5 kHz, along with 26 dB pads and 80 Hz high-pass filters. Yamaha's 1-knob compressors keep vocals and instruments even with a single control.
Rack Kit, Internal Power and Metal Chassis
The MG20XU includes a rack-mount kit and runs from an internal universal 100-240 V power supply. Its powder-coated metal chassis measures 444 x 130 x 500 mm and weighs 7.1 kg.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is the MG20XU different from the MG16XU?
The MG20XU handles up to sixteen mics and twenty line inputs, while the MG16XU handles ten mics and sixteen line inputs. Both share four groups, four AUX sends, SPX effects, USB audio and the same 444 mm wide chassis.
Does using the effects take up an AUX send?
Yes. AUX 4 also feeds the internal effects, leaving AUX 1-3 for monitor mixes when the effects are in use.
Can I multitrack record with the MG20XU?
No. The USB interface is 2-in/2-out and records the stereo mix. For multitrack recording, look at Yamaha's MGX or DM3 digital mixers.
What comes in the box?
Yamaha lists the Owner's Manual, Technical Specifications, AC power cord, Cubase AI Download Information and rack-mount kit. The FC5 foot switch is optional.
Should I consider an MGP console instead?
The MGP24X and MGP32X add more channels, Yamaha's Stereo Hybrid Channel and two effects processors that run at the same time. The MG20XU is the simpler, more compact choice when up to sixteen mics is enough.
