Sixteen Mic Inputs — the Top of the Analog MG Range
The MG20XU is the largest analog console Yamaha builds in the MG line: twenty channels, sixteen mic inputs on discrete Class-A D-PRE preamps, four subgroups, four AUX sends, one-knob compressors, sweepable 250 Hz–5 kHz mid EQ, 24 SPX effects programmes and a 24-bit/192 kHz USB audio interface.
Sixteen mic inputs is what separates it from everything below. A full band with a miked kit, three vocals, horns and a choir feed will fill an MG16XU; the MG20XU leaves you room. For venues, larger churches and production companies running multi-act nights, that headroom in channel count is the whole reason to buy it.

What You Get
- Sixteen mic inputs — twelve combo mic/line channels plus four that take an XLR mic or a stereo line pair. Six more mics than the MG16XU.
- USB Audio Class 2.0 interface, up to 192 kHz at 24-bit, with a Cubase AI download included.
- SPX effects, 24 programmes, with parameter control and an FC5 foot-switch jack.
- Sweepable mid EQ, 250 Hz–5 kHz, ±15 dB, on the mono channels, plus one-knob compressors, 80 Hz high-pass filters and a 26 dB pad.
- Four subgroups and four AUX sends — group drums, vocals, horns and playback separately while still feeding three independent monitor mixes.
- Internal universal power supply (100–240V), 2 × 12-segment metering, rack-mount kit included. 444 × 130 × 500 mm, 7.1 kg.
Reading the MG Model Names
Yamaha's MG names are a code, and once you know it the whole range makes sense at a glance:
- The number is the channel count — 06, 10, 12, 16, 20.
- X adds the SPX digital effects processor (reverbs, delays, chorus).
- U adds a USB audio interface for recording straight to a computer.
- F means channel faders instead of rotary knobs.
- K means the reverse — knobs instead of faders, for a shallower, lighter console.
So the MG20XU is twenty channels with effects and USB — the fully-loaded top of the analog range. Above it sit the MGP Premium consoles, which move to dual effects engines, six sends, matrix outputs and 24 or 32 channels.

FAQ
Q. Is it worth the step up from the MG16XU?
Only for the inputs. Preamps, effects, EQ, compressors, groups and sends are identical; the MG20XU gives you four more channels and six more mic inputs. Write out your channel list first — if it fits in ten mics, the MG16XU does the same job for less.
Q. Can I record each channel separately?
No — the USB interface carries a stereo mix. For multitrack recording, the MGX12 and MGX16 digital consoles record 18 and 22 tracks respectively.
Q. What is above this in the Yamaha range?
The MGP Premium consoles — MGP24X and MGP32X — with dual REV-X and SPX effects engines, six AUX plus two FX sends, matrix outputs, talkback, priority ducker and channel inserts. A different class of desk for installed and larger production work.
Q. Can it be rack-mounted?
Yes, and the kit is included. Same 444 × 130 × 500 mm chassis as the MG16 family, at 7.1 kg.
