The Biggest Analog MG Most Venues Need

The MG16XU brings together everything the analog MG range offers short of the 20-channel model: sixteen channels with ten mic inputs, four subgroups, four AUX sends, one-knob compressors, the sweepable 250 Hz to 5 kHz mid EQ, 24 SPX effects programmes and a 24-bit/192 kHz USB audio interface — in a rack-mountable chassis with an internal universal power supply.

It is the desk for a venue, a mid-size church, a school auditorium or a busy rehearsal complex: enough inputs for a full band with a drum kit, three independent foldback mixes even with reverb running, and a single USB cable when the show needs recording.

What You Get

  • USB Audio Class 2.0 interface, up to 192 kHz at 24-bit, for recording the mix and playing back into the desk. Cubase AI download included.
  • SPX effects, 24 programmes, with parameter control and an FC5 foot-switch jack.
  • Ten mic inputs on D-PRE preamps — eight combo mic/line channels plus two that take an XLR mic or a stereo line pair.
  • Sweepable mid EQ, 250 Hz–5 kHz, ±15 dB, on the mono channels — shared only with the MG16, MG16X and MG20XU.
  • Four subgroups and four AUX sends, one-knob compressors, 80 Hz high-pass filters, 26 dB pad.
  • Internal universal power supply (100–240V), 2 × 12-segment metering, rack-mount kit included. 444 × 130 × 500 mm, 6.8 kg.

Reading the MG Model Names

Yamaha's MG names are a code, and once you know it the whole range makes sense at a glance:

  • The number is the channel count — 06, 10, 12, 16, 20.
  • X adds the SPX digital effects processor (reverbs, delays, chorus).
  • U adds a USB audio interface for recording straight to a computer.
  • F means channel faders instead of rotary knobs.
  • K means the reverse — knobs instead of faders, for a shallower, lighter console.

So the MG16XU is sixteen channels with both effects and USB — the fully-loaded 16-channel console. The only step up in the analog range is the MG20XU, which adds four more channels and six more mic inputs.

FAQ

Q. Can I record each channel separately into my DAW?

No. The USB interface carries a stereo mix, not individual channels — true of every USB-equipped analog MG. For multitrack recording from a mixer, look at the MGX12 or MGX16 digital consoles, which record 18 and 22 tracks.

Q. Is it worth going to the MG20XU?

Only if you need the inputs. The MG20XU gives sixteen mic inputs instead of ten and twenty channels instead of sixteen; the preamps, effects, EQ, groups and sends are the same. Count your channel list before spending the difference.

Q. Does running reverb cost me a monitor mix?

One of the four sends feeds the effects, leaving three independent monitor feeds — enough for most stages. This is the practical reason to choose a 16-channel MG over a 12.

Q. Can it be rack-mounted?

Yes, and the kit is included in the box.
