A Front-of-House Console with Reverb Built In

The MG16X is the MG16 with Yamaha's SPX engine added — 24 programmes of reverb, delay and modulation, with parameter control and a foot-switch jack. Sixteen channels, ten mic inputs on D-PRE preamps, four subgroups, four AUX sends, one-knob compressors, and the sweepable 250 Hz to 5 kHz mid EQ that only the 16- and 20-channel MG consoles have.

With four sends on board, one feeding the effects still leaves three fully independent monitor mixes. That combination — ten mics, three foldback feeds, four groups and onboard reverb — covers a full band, a church with a worship team, or a mid-size venue, without a rack of outboard gear.

What You Get

  • SPX effects, 24 programmes, with a parameter knob and an FC5 foot-switch jack for muting the return.
  • Ten mic inputs on D-PRE preamps — eight combo mic/line channels plus two that take an XLR mic or a stereo line pair.
  • Sweepable mid EQ, 250 Hz–5 kHz, ±15 dB, on the mono channels — the single biggest sound-shaping upgrade over the MG12 family.
  • Four subgroups and four AUX sends, plus one-knob compressors, 80 Hz high-pass filters and a 26 dB pad on the mono channels.
  • Internal universal power supply, 100–240V, IEC mains lead.
  • 2 × 12-segment LED metering, rack-mount kit included, 444 × 130 × 500 mm, 6.8 kg.

Reading the MG Model Names

Yamaha's MG names are a code, and once you know it the whole range makes sense at a glance:

  • The number is the channel count — 06, 10, 12, 16, 20.
  • X adds the SPX digital effects processor (reverbs, delays, chorus).
  • U adds a USB audio interface for recording straight to a computer.
  • F means channel faders instead of rotary knobs.
  • K means the reverse — knobs instead of faders, for a shallower, lighter console.

So the MG16X is sixteen channels with effects and no USB. The MG16XU is the identical console with a USB interface added — that is the only difference between them.

FAQ

Q. Does the effects processor use up an AUX send?

One of the four sends is shared with the effects, so you keep three fully independent monitor feeds while running reverb. On the MG12 family, where there are only two sends, using effects leaves you just one.

Q. MG16X or MG16XU?

Only the USB interface separates them. If the desk will never connect to a computer, the MG16X does the same job for less. The MG16XU also includes a Cubase AI download.

Q. What does the sweepable mid actually give me?

Control over where the mid band sits, anywhere from 250 Hz to 5 kHz. Boxiness in a vocal usually lives around 300–500 Hz and harshness around 3 kHz — a fixed 2.5 kHz mid cannot reach the first of those. This is the main reason engineers step up from the MG12 family.

Q. How many mics exactly?

Ten. Channels 1–8 are combo mic/line; 9/10 and 11/12 take an XLR mic or a stereo line pair; 13/14 and 15/16 are line only. The rack-mount kit is in the box.
