Yamaha MG16X 16-Channel Analog Mixer with SPX Effects
The Yamaha MG16X is a 16-channel analog mixing console with Yamaha's SPX digital effects built in. It takes up to ten microphones on D-PRE preamps and gives you four group buses, four AUX sends and 24 effect programmes for vocals and instruments.
It is aimed at bands, churches, auditoriums and event companies that want a full-size fader desk with quality reverb and delay, without carrying an external effects unit. The rack-mount kit is included.

Ten D-PRE Mic Inputs on the MG16X
Channels 1-8 have balanced combo jacks, and channels 9/10 and 11/12 add XLR mic inputs beside their line jacks, giving up to ten microphones. All mic inputs use Yamaha's discrete Class-A D-PRE preamps with an inverted Darlington circuit, with +48V phantom power for condenser mics.
SPX Effects with 24 Programmes
The built-in SPX processor offers 24 programmes, from halls, rooms and plate reverbs to delays, vocal echo, chorus, flanger and pitch change. The PARAMETER knob fine-tunes each programme, AUX 4 doubles as the effects send, and an optional FC5 foot switch turns the effect on and off.
Four Groups and Four AUX Sends
Four group buses with GROUP OUT jacks let you sub-mix drums, vocals or instruments, or feed separate zones and recorders. Four AUX sends cover monitor mixes and external processing, and AUX 1 and AUX 2 have PRE switches for pre- or post-fader sends.
Sweepable Mid EQ and 1-Knob Compressors
The mono channels get a three-band EQ whose mid band sweeps from 250 Hz to 5 kHz, giving you more precise tone shaping than the fixed-mid MG12 range. Add Yamaha's 1-knob compressors, 26 dB pads and 80 Hz high-pass filters for clean, controlled sources.
Faders, PFL and FX Return Control
Channel faders, group faders, an FX RTN fader and a STEREO master make it easy to ride the mix. The effect return can be routed to the stereo bus and group buses, PFL switches let you check channels in headphones, and a 2 x 12-segment LED meter shows output levels.
Rack Ears, Internal Power and Metal Chassis
The MG16X comes with a rack-mount kit, so it can sit on a table or in a 19-inch rack. Its internal universal 100-240 V supply avoids an external adaptor, and the powder-coated metal chassis is built for regular gigging.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do the MG16, MG16X and MG16XU differ?
All three share the same 16-channel layout, preamps, four groups, four AUX sends, sweepable mid EQ and rack kit. The MG16X adds 24 SPX effects, and the MG16XU adds those effects plus a 24-bit/192 kHz USB audio interface.
Does using the effects take up an AUX send?
Yes. AUX 4 also feeds the internal effects, leaving AUX 1-3 for monitor mixes or external processors when the effects are in use.
Can I record to a computer with the MG16X?
There is no USB interface on the MG16X. Choose the MG16XU if you want 24-bit/192 kHz USB recording and playback on the same console.
What comes in the box?
Yamaha lists the Owner's Manual, Technical Specifications, AC power cord and rack-mount kit. The FC5 foot switch is optional.
Should I step up to the MG20XU?
Choose the MG20XU if you need more than ten microphones; it handles up to sixteen and adds USB audio. The MG16X is the better fit for up to ten mics with effects.
