Ten Mic Inputs, Four Groups, Four Sends

The MG16 is the point where the MG range stops being a compact mixer and becomes a front-of-house console. Sixteen channels with ten mic inputs, four subgroups, four AUX sends, and — the change most engineers notice first — a sweepable 250 Hz to 5 kHz mid EQ on the mono channels instead of the fixed 2.5 kHz mid used further down the range.

That sweep is what lets you find and cut the exact frequency boxing up a vocal or making a guitar honk, rather than nudging a fixed band and hoping. Add four sends for real monitor mixes and a rack-mount kit in the box, and this is an install and touring desk. No effects and no USB on this model.

What You Get

  • Ten mic inputs on D-PRE preamps — eight combo mic/line channels plus two that take an XLR mic or a stereo line pair.
  • Sweepable mid EQ, 250 Hz–5 kHz, ±15 dB, on the mono channels. Only the MG16 and MG20 consoles have this; everything smaller has a fixed 2.5 kHz mid.
  • Four subgroups and four AUX sends — enough to group drums and vocals separately while running two or three independent monitor feeds.
  • One-knob compressors on the mono channels, plus 80 Hz high-pass filters and a 26 dB pad.
  • Internal universal power supply, 100–240V, with an IEC mains lead — important for installs and for unstable mains.
  • Rack-mount kit included in the box. 444 × 130 × 500 mm, 6.6 kg.

Reading the MG Model Names

Yamaha's MG names are a code, and once you know it the whole range makes sense at a glance:

  • The number is the channel count — 06, 10, 12, 16, 20.
  • X adds the SPX digital effects processor (reverbs, delays, chorus).
  • U adds a USB audio interface for recording straight to a computer.
  • F means channel faders instead of rotary knobs.
  • K means the reverse — knobs instead of faders, for a shallower, lighter console.

So the MG16 is sixteen channels, no effects, no USB. The MG16X adds SPX; the MG16XU adds SPX and USB. All three share the same chassis, preamps, sweepable EQ and routing.

FAQ

Q. What really changes between the MG12 and the MG16?

Four things: ten mic inputs instead of six, four subgroups instead of two, four AUX sends instead of two, and the sweepable mid EQ. The rack kit is also included rather than optional. If you only need six mics and one monitor mix, the MG12 family is the sensible buy.

Q. Should I buy the MG16X or MG16XU instead?

The MG16X adds 24 SPX effects programmes; the MG16XU adds effects plus a 24-bit/192 kHz USB interface. The plain MG16 makes sense in installs that already have outboard processing, or where the desk feeds a separate recording system.

Q. Can it be rack-mounted?

Yes — and the kit is supplied in the box, unlike the MG12 family which needs the optional RK-MG12.

Q. How many mics exactly?

Ten. Channels 1–8 are combo mic/line; channels 9/10 and 11/12 take an XLR mic or a stereo line pair, not both; channels 13/14 and 15/16 are line only.
