Twelve Channels, Two Groups, Onboard Reverb

The MG12X is the MG12 with Yamaha's SPX effects engine — 24 programmes of reverb, delay and modulation, a parameter control and a foot-switch jack. Everything else carries over: six mic inputs on D-PRE preamps, two subgroups, two AUX sends, one-knob compressors, sweepable-mid EQ, faders and an internal universal power supply.

For most bands, churches and school halls this is the sweet spot of the analog MG range — enough inputs for a full band, real routing, and reverb built in so nothing extra has to be carried or patched.

What You Get

  • SPX effects, 24 programmes, with a parameter knob and an FC5 foot-switch jack for muting the return between songs.
  • Six mic inputs on D-PRE preamps — four combo mic/line channels plus two that take an XLR mic or a stereo line pair.
  • Two subgroups and two AUX sends (one of which feeds the effects), so you can group the drums and still run a monitor mix.
  • One-knob compressors and three-band EQ with a sweepable 250 Hz–5 kHz mid on the mono channels — the band where vocal boxiness and guitar honk live.
  • Internal universal power supply, 100–240V, with a standard IEC mains lead rather than an adapter.
  • 2 × 12-segment LED metering, channel faders, 308 × 118 × 422 mm, 4.2 kg. Optional RK-MG12 rack kit.

Reading the MG Model Names

Yamaha's MG names are a code, and once you know it the whole range makes sense at a glance:

  • The number is the channel count — 06, 10, 12, 16, 20.
  • X adds the SPX digital effects processor (reverbs, delays, chorus).
  • U adds a USB audio interface for recording straight to a computer.
  • F means channel faders instead of rotary knobs.
  • K means the reverse — knobs instead of faders, for a shallower, lighter console.

So the MG12X is twelve channels with effects and no USB. The MG12XU is the identical desk with a USB interface added — the only difference between them.

FAQ

Q. What is the difference between the MG12X and the MG12XU?

The USB audio interface, and nothing else. Same preamps, effects, EQ, compressors, chassis and routing. If the desk will never be connected to a computer, the MG12X saves money with no compromise.

Q. Does using the effects cost me an AUX send?

Yes — one of the two sends feeds the internal SPX processor. So in practice you have one send for a monitor wedge and one for reverb. If you need two independent monitor mixes and effects, the MG16X or MG16XU give you four sends.

Q. How many microphones fit?

Six. Channels 1–4 are combo mic/line; channels 5/6 and 7/8 take either an XLR mic or a stereo line pair; channels 9/10 are line only.

Q. Can it be rack-mounted?

Yes, with the optional RK-MG12 kit. The MG16 and MG20XU include theirs in the box.
