Yamaha HS8 8-Inch Powered Studio Monitors (Pair)
The Yamaha HS8 is the largest full-range model in the HS Series: a 2-way, bi-amplified nearfield studio monitor with an 8-inch woofer and a 1-inch dome tweeter in a bass-reflex MDF cabinet. This listing is a pair, so you receive two HS8 monitors, each with its own amplifier, power cord and inputs.
It suits producers and engineers working on bass-heavy genres, film and game audio, or anyone with a larger room who wants to hear low frequencies down to 38 Hz without adding a subwoofer. The HS8 takes its signal from an audio interface, mixer or keyboard.
Key Features
Built for Accuracy, Not Flattery
Yamaha voices the HS Series for a flat response and a tight stereo image, continuing the reference-monitor thinking that runs from the NS-10M through the MSP and earlier HS models. Nothing is hyped, so problems in a mix show up while you can still fix them, and mixes tend to translate better to other systems.

8-Inch Woofer and 1-Inch Dome Tweeter
Each HS8 pairs an 8-inch cone woofer with a 1-inch dome tweeter, crossing over at 2 kHz. Yamaha developed these transducers with a revised magnetic circuit for smooth transitions, and the large woofer takes the response down to 38 Hz (-10 dB) while the tweeter extends to 30 kHz.
120 W Bi-Amplified Studio Monitor
A dedicated 75 W amplifier drives the woofer and a separate 45 W amplifier drives the tweeter, for 120 W per monitor. Matching each amplifier to its driver helps keep the response even across the spectrum. Because both speakers in the pair are self-powered, they can be placed independently.

Low-Resonance MDF Cabinet
The cabinet is made from dense, well-damped MDF and uses a three-way mitred joint at the corners, a technique Yamaha draws from its piano-making experience. Stiffer corners mean less cabinet resonance colouring what you hear.
Quieter Bass Port
Air turbulence at the ends of a bass port can add noise of its own. Yamaha analysed and reshaped the HS port to control these vortices, cutting audible port noise by up to 6 dB, which keeps low-level detail clearer.

Room Control and High Trim
Room Control trims the low end by 0, -2 or -4 dB below 500 Hz to offset the bass build-up you get near walls. High Trim adjusts the high frequencies by ±2 dB to tame a bright room or lift a dull one. A level control with a centre click sits alongside.
Balanced XLR and TRS Inputs
Each HS8 has an XLR input and a TRS phone jack input, both balanced, and both also accept unbalanced signals. That makes it easy to connect an audio interface, mixer or keyboard over the long, interference-resistant cable runs typical of a studio.

Frequently Asked Questions
What comes in the box with the HS8 pair?
You get two HS8 monitors. Yamaha packages each monitor singly and lists an owner's manual and a power cord with each unit, so the pair comes with two of each. Signal cables and stands are not listed by Yamaha, so plan for those separately.
HS8 or HS7: which should I pick?
Both share the same 1-inch tweeter, 2 kHz crossover and controls. The HS8's 8-inch woofer and 120 W reach 38 Hz (-10 dB), against 43 Hz for the 6.5-inch, 95 W HS7. The HS8 is also bigger, at 250 x 390 x 334 mm and 10.2 kg per unit versus 210 x 332 x 284 mm and 8.2 kg, so check your desk or stands and room size.
Do I need a subwoofer with the HS8?
For most music work the HS8's reach to 38 Hz is enough on its own. If you need to monitor content lower than that, the HS8S subwoofer goes down to 22 Hz and has left and right XLR outputs, low and high cut controls and a phase switch for integrating with HS monitors.
What do I need to connect the HS8 to my computer?
The HS8 has XLR and TRS inputs only, with no RCA or 3.5 mm socket, so most people connect it through an audio interface or mixer. Each monitor also needs its own mains connection using the supplied power cord.
How much power does an HS8 draw?
Yamaha rates the power consumption at 60 W per monitor, so 120 W for the pair.
