The Yamaha CX40 is a full-size nylon-string classical guitar with a pickup fitted. Yamaha's own description is direct about what it is: “the electro version of the Yamaha C40 classical guitar, which has outstanding value for money and a combination of exceptional playability and superb tone”.
The C40 is the guitar that sits in more music schools and first-year classrooms than almost any other instrument in the world. The CX40 is that same guitar — the same body, the same spruce top, the same 650 mm scale and 52 mm nut — with a piezo pickup and a small volume-and-tone panel added to the side.
If you are learning classical or fingerstyle, taking graded exams, or playing in a church, school or small venue where you need to be heard, this is the sensible starting point. Nylon strings, gloss natural finish, and a price that leaves budget for lessons.
A Classical Guitar Is a Different Instrument
This is worth understanding before you buy, because a classical guitar is not just an acoustic with softer strings. Three things set it apart, and each one changes what the guitar is good for.
1. Nylon strings, not steel
Nylon is under far less tension than steel and is much kinder to bare fingertips — the single biggest reason classical guitars are recommended to beginners and to children. The tone is warmer, rounder and less bright, which is what classical, bossa nova, flamenco and a great deal of film and church music is written for.
2. A wide, flat neck built for fingers
The nut is 52 mm with 11.8 mm between strings — substantially wider than the 43 mm neck on a steel-string acoustic. That space exists so your right hand can pick individual strings cleanly and your left hand can hold complex chord shapes without muting neighbours. It is a genuine advantage for fingerstyle and a genuine adjustment if you are used to a narrow neck.
3. A full 650 mm classical scale
This is the standard scale that classical repertoire, method books and graded exam syllabi are written around. Learning on the correct scale means the fingerings in your book match the guitar in your hands — which matters more than it sounds if you are working towards exams.

FAQ
Q. Is this a good guitar for a complete beginner?
Yes, and it is one of the standard recommendations. Nylon strings are far gentler on uncalloused fingertips than steel, the neck is wide enough that beginners' fingers do not accidentally mute strings, and the C40 platform it is based on is what a great many teachers put in a first-timer's hands. Buy the CX40 rather than the C40 only if you know you will need to plug in.
Q. Can I put steel strings on it?
No — please don't. A classical guitar is built for the much lower tension of nylon and has no truss rod to resist steel. Fitting steel strings can pull the neck forward and lift the bridge, and the damage is not covered by warranty. If you want steel strings, you want a different guitar and we can point you at one.
Q. Does it have an EQ or a built-in tuner?
No. Yamaha specifies the SYSTEM50 as a volume and tone system — two controls, nothing more. If you want a three-band EQ and an onboard chromatic tuner, that is what the CPX600 and APX600 offer, though those are steel-string instruments. For the CX40, a clip-on tuner is the usual companion and costs very little.
Q. Does it need a battery?
Yamaha publishes the SYSTEM50 simply as a volume-and-tone system and does not list a battery specification, and outside sources disagree on the point. If this matters for how you plan to use it, ask us and we will check the actual unit before it ships rather than guess.
Q. Does the CX40 have a solid top?
No. Yamaha lists the top as “Spruce” rather than solid spruce, so it is a laminate top. At this price that is expected, and it brings a real benefit in Indian conditions: a laminate top is considerably more tolerant of humidity swings than a solid one. If you want a solid-top classical, tell us your budget and we will show you the options.
Q. Will the wide neck be hard to get used to?
If you have only played steel-string or electric, the 52 mm nut will feel wide at first — that is normal and it passes within a few weeks. If you are starting from scratch, you will simply learn on it and never think about it. Players with smaller hands sometimes prefer a narrower neck, so if that is a concern, come and try one.
Q. Is a case or gig bag included?
No — the CX40 is supplied without a case. A classical body needs a classical-shaped bag rather than a dreadnought one, so ask us and we will match a bag to it before it ships.
Q. How often will I need to tune it?
More often than a steel-string, especially when it is new. Nylon stretches, and a fresh set can take a week or two of daily retuning before it settles and holds. This is completely normal and not a fault — stretch each new string gently by hand when you fit it and the process goes much faster.
