The Value Pick of the C Series.

Yamaha's own line on the C70 is refreshingly blunt: it “might be one of Yamaha's most inexpensive full-size classical models, but its quality and tone are outstanding. A real bargain for beginners.”

What makes it the smart buy is what it borrows from further up the range. It gets the same gold YTM-06 tuners as the flagship C80 and smarter black-and-white binding than the C40 — for a good deal less than the C80 costs. The only thing the C80 has that this does not is nato back and sides.

Underneath, it is a proper full-size classical: 650 mm scale, 52 mm nut, 11.8 mm string spacing, spruce top, rosewood fingerboard and bridge, gloss body and matte neck. If the C40 feels too plain and the C80 too dear, this is the one.

Where the C70 Sits in the Range

The C Series is three guitars that play identically and differ only in materials and trim. Here is exactly where this one lands.

Full-size Yamaha CG classical body

The standard non-cutaway classical outline in a gloss natural finish, with a spruce top and a traditional decorative rosette. Full-size means it is the right instrument for teenagers and adults.

Gold YTM-06 tuners — the same as the C80

Gold machine heads on the traditional slotted headstock, shared with the top model in the range. The geared rollers give fine control, which is exactly what settling a new set of nylon strings demands.

650 mm scale, 52 mm nut, 11.8 mm string spacing

Standard classical geometry with a rosewood fingerboard and bridge — the scale that classical repertoire, method books and graded exam syllabi are all written around.

Nylon strings, gentle on the fingers

Nylon sits under far less tension than steel and is much kinder to uncalloused fingertips — the main reason classical guitars are the standard recommendation for beginners and for anyone learning fingerstyle.

Gloss body, matte neck, black-and-white binding

Gloss on the body for looks and protection, matte on the neck so your thumb slides rather than sticks — which matters a great deal during long practice sessions in a warm climate.

Q. Is the C70 worth the extra over a C40?

For most people, yes — this is the step in the range that gives you the most for the money, because you get the same gold tuners as the flagship C80 and better binding for a modest increase. If the budget is genuinely tight, though, the C40 plays exactly the same and there is no shame in it.

Q. Should I stretch to the C80 instead?

Only if you specifically want nato back and sides. That is the single difference between them — both have gold tuners, the same laminated spruce top and identical neck geometry. It is a narrower gap than the price difference implies.

Q. Does the C70 have a solid top?

No. Yamaha lists the top as “Spruce” rather than solid spruce, so it is laminated — as it is right across the C Series. Solid tops begin with the CG Series. A laminate top is also considerably more tolerant of humidity swings, which is a genuine advantage in most of India.

Q. Is this the right size for my child?

Only if they are a teenager or close to adult height — the C70 is full-size. For a child of roughly 8 to 12, the 3/4 size CS40 is the correct instrument. Tell us their age and height and we will point you at the right one.

Q. Can I put steel strings on it?

No — please don't. A classical guitar is built for the far lower tension of nylon and has no truss rod to resist steel. Steel strings can pull the neck forward and lift the bridge, and that damage is not covered by warranty.

Q. Can I plug it in?

Not as it comes — the C70 is purely acoustic with no pickup. If you need to be amplified, look at the CX40 or the CGX102. A pickup can also be retrofitted later; ask us about the options.

Q. Is a case or gig bag included?

No — the C70 is supplied without a case. A classical body needs a classical-shaped bag rather than a dreadnought one, so ask us and we will match one to it before it ships.
