Yamaha C40M Classical Guitar
The Yamaha C40M is the all-matt version of the C40, one of Yamaha's most affordable full-size classical guitars. Instead of a gloss body, it has an ultra-thin natural satin finish on both body and neck, which Yamaha says gives a rich, natural sound and a great feel.
It suits beginners, students and returning players who want a full-size nylon-string guitar with standard classical proportions, and who prefer the look and feel of a satin finish to a shiny one.
Key Features
Ultra-Thin Natural Satin Finish
The whole C40M, body and neck, is finished in matt. Yamaha uses an ultra-thin natural satin finish, which it credits with a rich, natural sound and an incredible feel in the hands.
Full-Size Classical Body
The C40M uses Yamaha's classical guitar body style with a 490 mm body length, 370 mm width and 94-100 mm depth. As a full-size instrument, it suits teenage and adult players.
Spruce Top
Yamaha highlights the spruce top as a key feature of the C40M. Spruce is a long-established tonewood for guitar soundboards, and it sits over locally sourced tonewood back and sides.
650 mm Scale and 52 mm Nut on the C40M
The standard 650 mm classical scale, 52 mm nut width and 11.8 mm string spacing give your fingers room to fret cleanly and pluck individual strings, matching the dimensions classical method books are written for.
Rosewood Fingerboard and Bridge
A flat rosewood fingerboard and rosewood bridge, with a urea nut and saddle, form the playing surface. The flat fingerboard is typical of classical guitars and suits fingerstyle technique.
Chrome RM-1252X Tuners
Chrome RM-1252X machine heads let you make the fine adjustments that new nylon strings need while they settle. The guitar is fitted with medium-tension strings, and the body is trimmed with black binding and a decal soundhole inlay.
Built to Last
Yamaha designed its C40 models using knowledge from building its premium professional guitars, with woods chosen for sound and durability. To reduce waste, Yamaha uses various locally sourced tonewood species based on availability.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the Yamaha C40M and the C40?
Yamaha lists the same specifications for both, including the spruce top, 650 mm scale, 52 mm nut, chrome RM-1252X tuners and black binding. The difference is the finish: the C40M is matt on the body and neck, while the C40 has a gloss body and matt neck.
How does the C40M compare with the CG122MS?
Both have a matt body finish and the same 650 mm scale and 52 mm nut. The CG122MS steps up to a solid spruce top with nato back, sides and neck, while the C40M has a spruce top with locally sourced tonewood back, sides and neck.
Is the C40M suitable for a child?
The C40M is full size, so it suits teenagers and adults. For younger learners, the Yamaha CS40 has a 3/4-scale, compact body designed specifically for young players.
Can I plug the C40M into an amplifier?
No, the C40M is purely acoustic with no electronics. The CX40 is the electro version of the C40, with a SYSTEM50 pickup, volume and tone controls and a line output.
What comes in the box?
You get the guitar, strung with medium-tension nylon strings. Yamaha does not supply a case or accessories with the C40M, so you may want to add a gig bag, tuner and spare strings.
