Yamaha CGX102 Electro-Acoustic Classical Guitar

The Yamaha CGX102 is the entry-level electro-acoustic model in Yamaha's CG Series of classical guitars. It combines the acoustic design of the CG102 with Yamaha's SYSTEM68N pickup and preamp, giving you a spruce-topped, full-size nylon-string guitar that can be plugged straight into an amplifier or PA.

It suits students and hobby players who want one classical guitar for practice at home and for playing amplified at school events, recitals, places of worship or small venues. The onboard tuner is also handy for beginners still learning to tune by ear.

Key Features

SYSTEM68N Contact Pickup

The CGX102 uses Yamaha's SYSTEM68N, which has a contact pickup installed inside the body. Plug a cable into the output jack and the built-in preamp switches on automatically, because the jack doubles as the end pin and power switch. The line output has an impedance of 1 kΩ for connection to an amplifier, PA or interface.

Volume and Tone Controls

A side-mounted control panel carries volume and tone controls. Turning the tone control to the right raises bass and treble together, turning it left lowers both, and the centre position is flat. It is a simple layout that makes quick adjustments easy on stage.

Built-In Chromatic Tuner

The SYSTEM68N includes a 12-semitone chromatic tuner calibrated to A4 = 440 Hz, with an accuracy of ±3 cents. It switches off automatically if no note is shown for more than a minute, and the output is not muted while you tune. Nylon strings take time to settle, so having a tuner on the guitar itself is genuinely useful.

Long Battery Life from Two AA Cells

The preamp runs on two AA alkaline batteries, with Yamaha quoting approximately 200 hours of use without the tuner. When the batteries run low, the tuner lamps flash alternately as a reminder. AA batteries are easy to find and quick to replace.

Full-Size CGX102 Classical Body

The CGX102 has a full-size classical body 490 mm long, 370 mm wide and 94-100 mm deep. The spruce top sits over locally sourced tonewood back and sides, with black and natural binding and a decal soundhole inlay. Because the body is full depth, it works well as an unplugged acoustic guitar too.

650 mm Scale and 52 mm Nut

Standard full-size classical dimensions give a 650 mm (25 9/16") scale, a 52 mm (2 1/16") nut and 11.8 mm string spacing. The rosewood fingerboard has a flat radius, in keeping with classical guitar tradition. Fingerings learned on the CGX102 transfer directly to any full-size classical guitar.

Gloss Body, Matte Neck and Chrome Tuners

The body is finished in gloss while the neck has a matte finish for smooth movement up and down the fingerboard. Chrome tuners, a rosewood bridge and a urea nut and saddle complete the hardware. The guitar is strung with medium nylon strings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the CGX102 different from the Yamaha CX40?

Both are full-size electro-acoustic classical guitars with a spruce top, 650 mm scale and 52 mm nut. The CX40 uses Yamaha's SYSTEM50 with volume and tone controls only, while the CGX102 uses the SYSTEM68N contact pickup system, which adds a built-in chromatic tuner. The CGX102 also has black and natural body binding, against plain black on the CX40.

Should I choose the CGX102 or the acoustic CG122MS?

The CG122MS has a solid spruce top, nato back, sides and neck and a matte body finish, but no electronics. The CGX102 has a spruce top that is not listed as solid, a gloss body and built-in SYSTEM68N electronics. Choose the CG122MS for an acoustic-only instrument with a solid top, or the CGX102 if you need to plug in.

What power does the CGX102 need?

The preamp runs on two AA alkaline batteries, giving approximately 200 hours of use without the tuner, according to Yamaha. The preamp turns on when a cable is plugged into the output jack, so unplug the cable when you are not playing to save battery life.

Can I play the CGX102 without plugging in?

Yes. It has a full-size, full-depth classical body, so it plays as a normal acoustic nylon-string guitar. The electronics are only needed when you want to amplify or record it through the line output.

Does the CGX102 come with a case?

No. Yamaha does not list a case or gig bag with the CGX102. It is supplied fitted with medium nylon strings.
