Yamaha Revstar Standard RSS20 Electric Guitar

The Yamaha Revstar Standard RSS20 is the humbucker-equipped model in the middle tier of the Revstar series. It combines a maple-topped chambered mahogany body and a carbon-reinforced set-in neck with two Yamaha VH5 Alnico V humbuckers, 5-way switching and the Focus Switch passive boost.

It is built for players who want one guitar that covers a lot of ground, from clean rhythm and in-between tones to thick, driven leads, for gigging, recording and serious practice. Stainless steel frets and a deluxe gig bag make it a practical long-term instrument.

Key Features

Chambered mahogany body and carbon-reinforced neck of a Yamaha Revstar Standard guitar

Chambered Body with Carbon-Reinforced Neck

The RSS20 pairs a maple top with a chambered mahogany back, designed using Yamaha's Acoustic Design process to sculpt tone, reduce weight and improve balance. The set-in 3-piece mahogany neck has carbon reinforcement to improve vibration transfer between neck and body.

VH5 Alnico V Humbuckers on the RSS20

A VH5n humbucker at the neck and a VH5b at the bridge are custom designed by Yamaha and use Alnico V magnets for a powerful tone. They suit everything from warm clean chords to saturated rock and blues leads.

5-Way Pickup Switching

A 5-position lever switch gives this two-pickup guitar the flexibility of a three-pickup instrument. Positions 2 and 4 slightly delay the opposite pickup, creating a subtle phase shift that offers a fresh take on classic in-between sounds.

Focus Switch Passive Boost

Pulling up the Master Tone knob engages the Focus Switch, a passive boost with an effect similar to overwound pickups: darker highs, stronger mids and lows, and a more aggressive character. It needs no battery and adds another distinct voice for solos or heavier parts.

Stainless Steel Jumbo Frets

The 12" radius rosewood fingerboard carries 22 jumbo stainless steel frets. The neck has a satin polyurethane finish, a 41.9 mm nut width and a thickness of 21.0 mm at the first fret, with a 24-3/4" (628.6 mm) scale.

Tune-O-Matic Bridge and Stopbar Tailpiece

A Tune-O-Matic bridge with individually adjustable saddles allows accurate intonation, and a stopbar tailpiece anchors the strings. Die-cast tuners and a PPS nut round out the hardware, with 10.5 mm string spacing.

Deluxe Gig Bag Included

Yamaha supplies the RSS20 with a deluxe gig bag, and it is strung with Elixir Nanoweb Light .010–.046 strings. Every Revstar Standard also carries Yamaha's "Revstar" hanko stamp as its seal of approval.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the RSS20 different from the Revstar Element RSE20?

The RSS20 adds a maple top, carbon reinforcement in the neck, stainless steel frets, VH5 humbuckers, a 5-way switch and the Focus Switch boost, and comes with a deluxe gig bag. The RSE20 has a chambered all-mahogany body, VH3 humbuckers, a 3-way switch, a Dry Switch filter and no gig bag.

RSS20 or RSS02T: which should I choose?

Both share the same Revstar Standard body, neck, 5-way switching and Focus Switch. The RSS20 has VH5 humbuckers and a stopbar tailpiece, while the RSS02T uses VP5 P90-style single-coils and a racing tailpiece. Pick the RSS20 for thicker humbucker tone and the RSS02T for brighter, chiming P90 character.

What does the Focus Switch do?

It is a passive boost engaged by pulling up the Master Tone knob. Yamaha describes the effect as similar to overwound pickups, with darker highs, more mids and lows and a more aggressive character. No battery is needed.

Which finishes can I choose?

This listing offers the RSS20 in Swift Blue, Vintage White, Flash Green, Mist Green, Sonic Blue, Sunset Burst, Hot Merlot and Black. Select your preferred finish from the options above.

What comes with the RSS20?

Yamaha includes a deluxe gig bag, and the guitar is strung with Elixir Nanoweb Light .010–.046 strings.

Who is the RSS20 best suited to?

It suits intermediate and gigging guitarists who want a versatile dual-humbucker guitar with extra sounds from 5-way switching and the Focus Switch, without moving up to the Japanese-made Revstar Professional range.
