All-Mesh Pads and the DTX-PRO Module

A bass drum pedal is not supplied with this kit. Yamaha ships the DTX6K5-M with a 7.5-inch kick tower but no pedal, so budget for one — or bring the pedal you already play. We will match a suitable Yamaha pedal to it when you order.

The DTX6K5-M is where the DTX range stops being a practice tool and becomes an instrument. Every drum pad is mesh — a 12-inch three-piezo snare and three 10-inch toms — so the stick rebounds the way it does on a tuned acoustic head, and the noise reaching the rest of the house drops sharply compared with rubber.

Behind them sits the DTX-PRO module: 70 preset kits sampled in world-renowned studios, over 700 voices and room for 200 kits of your own. Three KIT MODIFIER knobs — AMBIENCE, COMP and EFFECT — reshape the whole kit in seconds, so a dry, close-miked sound becomes a big room sound without opening a menu.

What You Get

  • 12-inch three-piezo mesh snare. Head and rim zones are read separately for rim shots and cross-stick work, and the pad mounts on a ball clamp so the angle can be set to how you actually sit.
  • Three 10-inch mesh tom pads. Mesh heads give acoustic-like rebound and are markedly quieter in the room than rubber — the single biggest quality-of-life difference over the DTX402 kits.
  • DTX-PRO module with 70 preset kits and over 700 voices, sampled in world-renowned studios, with space for up to 200 user kits.
  • KIT MODIFIER — AMBIENCE, COMP and EFFECT. Three physical knobs that change the character of the entire kit at once, rather than editing pads one at a time.
  • 15-inch ride with positional sensing, so the sound changes as you move from the bow towards the edge, plus two 13-inch crashes. All cymbals read edge, bow and cup, and choke when you grab the edge.
  • Ten-inch three-zone hi-hat pad on a Yamaha HS650A stand — an acoustic-grade hi-hat stand, not a compact substitute, so the foot technique is the real thing.
  • Bleed function in firmware V2.00 reproduces the way an acoustic kit's drums resonate into one another.
  • Ten training functions, including Rhythm Gate and Measure Break, carried over from the range Yamaha built for teaching.
  • Expandable to 14 pads, with USB audio and MIDI to a computer or mobile device. Cubase AI is included, and the free DTX Touch and Rec'n'Share apps are supported.

Is the DTX6K5-M the Right One for You?

Buy it if...

You already play, or you are past the beginner stage and the rubber pads on an entry kit are holding your hands back. Mesh rebound, positional ride sensing and a proper hi-hat stand are the three things that make an electronic kit feel like drumming rather than like tapping.

Choose the DTX452K instead if...

You are starting out, or buying for a child taking early grades. The DTX452K includes a bass drum pedal, costs considerably less and still gives three-zone snare articulation and real pedal technique. The DTX6K5-M is a lot of instrument for a first month.

Budget for the pedal

Unlike the DTX402-series kits, no bass drum pedal is in the box. This is normal at this level — drummers at this stage usually have a pedal they prefer — but it is a real cost if you are coming from an entry kit, so factor it in before comparing prices.

How the DTX6K5-M sits against the DTX402-series kits we stock. The step up is the module, the mesh pads and the cymbals.

What Is Not in the Box

Worth knowing before you order:

  • A bass drum pedal. The most important omission on this kit — the kick tower is supplied, the pedal is not.
  • A drum throne. Correct seat height matters more, not less, as technique develops.
  • Sticks. 5A is the usual starting size.
  • Headphones, or a drum monitor if more than one person needs to hear the kit.

Tell us your budget and we will put the complete setup together sensibly rather than overselling any one accessory.

FAQ

Q. Does it come with a bass drum pedal?

No. Yamaha supplies the 7.5-inch kick tower but no pedal. Any standard bass drum pedal will work, and we will recommend one to suit your playing and budget when you order.

Q. How much difference do mesh heads actually make?

A great deal, in two ways. The stick rebounds close to how it does on a tuned acoustic head, so technique built on this kit transfers properly. And mesh is significantly quieter in the room than rubber, which matters if you practise in a flat or share walls.

Q. What is positional sensing on the ride?

The module reads where on the pad you strike and changes the sound accordingly, so moving from the bow towards the edge shifts the tone as it would on a real ride. Combined with edge, bow and cup zones and choking, it makes ride patterns far more expressive.

Q. What does the KIT MODIFIER do?

AMBIENCE, COMP and EFFECT are three knobs that reshape the whole kit at once — room sound, compression and effects. It is the fastest way to move from a dry studio sound to a big live one without editing individual pads.

Q. Can I add more pads later?

Yes. The DTX-PRO module supports up to 14 pads, so extra toms, cymbals or auxiliary pads can be added as your setup grows.

Q. Will it connect to my computer or phone?

Yes. USB carries audio and MIDI for recording into a DAW, and the free DTX Touch and Rec'n'Share apps are supported. A Cubase AI download is included.
