The Yamaha TRBX504 is the four-string model in the TRBX 500 Series, built around a sculpted solid mahogany body, a 5-piece maple and mahogany neck and two YGD-designed H5 humbuckers. Its preamp can run in active mode with a 3-band EQ or be switched to passive, with the output level matched between the two.
It suits bassists who have outgrown a first instrument and want proper tone-shaping for gigs, church services, sessions and home recording, without losing the option of a simple passive sound. The slim 38 mm nut and 34" scale make it comfortable for fingerstyle, pick and slap playing alike.
Key Features
Active/Passive Preamp with Level-Matched Output
Yamaha describes the TRBX504 circuit as audiophile-grade, and a mini switch moves it between active and passive operation. The output is level-matched in both modes, so flipping the switch mid-song does not leave you suddenly louder or quieter. In passive mode the treble knob takes over as a master passive tone control.
YGD H5 Alnico V Humbuckers
Both pickups are YGD-designed H5 double-coil units with a quad-polepiece layout and Alnico V magnets. Yamaha voiced them for a clean, open tone with enough output to drive the active circuit and enough sensitivity to keep detail in passive mode. A pickup balancer lets you blend between neck and bridge.
3-Band EQ with a Middle Control
In active mode you get Bass, Middle and Treble boost/cut alongside Master Volume and the balancer. The Middle control is the key step up from the 2-band EQ on the TRBX304, helping the bass cut through a busy band mix. Gold-plated contacts are used at key points in the signal chain for reliable connections.
Battery Alert LED
An LED on the back panel lights up to indicate low battery power. It gives you a clear warning to change the battery before it causes a sudden loss of signal during a performance.
Sculpted Solid Mahogany Body on the TRBX504
The body is solid mahogany with a mass-optimised 3D sculpted shape, designed to balance tone, comfort and weight distribution. It is finished in satin polyurethane for a smooth, understated look and feel.
5-Piece Neck and Bolt-On Joint
The 5-piece maple and mahogany laminated neck is built for stability and carries a 24-fret rosewood fingerboard with a 10" radius and a slim 38 mm nut. Yamaha refined the precision-fitted bolt-on neck joint through extensive play-testing to balance strength, vibration transfer and upper-fret access. A straight string pull from nut to tuner helps tuning stability.
High-Mass Die-Cast Bridge
A high-mass die-cast bridge transfers string vibration efficiently into the body for a full sound, while giving plenty of adjustment for setup. String spacing on the TRBX504 is 19 mm, and the output jack is mounted on a durable metal plate for easy maintenance.
Three Satin Finishes at YMS

The TRBX504 also has a satin finish, where the TRBX304 is gloss.
How does it compare with the TRBX604FM?
Both share the Alnico V double-coil pickups, 3-band active/passive preamp, battery alert LED, 5-piece neck and 38 mm nut. The TRBX604FM swaps the solid mahogany body for an alder body with a flamed maple top, so the choice is mainly about body wood and looks.
Should I choose the TRBX504 or the 5-string TRBX505?
Choose the TRBX505 if you need a low B string. It has a wider 43 mm nut, 18 mm string spacing and a flatter 600 mm fingerboard radius, while the TRBX504 has a 38 mm nut, 19 mm spacing and a 250 mm radius. The electronics and body construction are otherwise the same.
Can I play the TRBX504 if the battery runs out?
Yes. Set the active/passive switch to passive and the bass continues to work without the preamp. The battery alert LED on the back panel also warns you when power is running low.
What strings does it come with, and is a case included?
Yamaha lists D'Addario EXL170 strings (0.045-0.100) for the TRBX504. A case or gig bag is not included, so we recommend adding one for transport.
