Yamaha TRBX305 5-String Active Electric Bass with Performance EQ

The Yamaha TRBX305 is the five-string model in the TRBX300 series, combining a sculpted solid mahogany body, a five-piece maple/mahogany neck and Yamaha's Performance EQ active circuit. The extra string extends the range below a four-string's lowest note while keeping the same quick-access preset tones.

It is a strong choice for church, gospel, metal, pop and session players whose parts go below bottom E, or for anyone who wants more notes under the hand without shifting position. The wider 43 mm neck and flatter fingerboard are shaped specifically for five-string technique.

Key Features

A Full-Scale Five-String Yamaha TRBX305

The TRBX305 keeps the full 34 in (863.6 mm) scale of the TRBX range and comes strung with a D'Addario EXL170-5 set, gauged 0.045 to 0.130. A full-length scale helps the lowest string feel firm and focused rather than loose.

Performance EQ Presets for Fast Tone Changes

A five-position lever selects from Yamaha's Slap, Pick, Flat, Finger and Solo EQ curves, with a 2-band bass and treble EQ, pickup balancer and master volume for fine-tuning. You can move between song styles quickly without reaching for a pedalboard.

43 mm nut width on the Yamaha TRBX305 5-string bass neck

Neck Dimensions Built for Five Strings

The neck has a 43 mm nut, 63.4 mm width at the 12th fret and a flatter 600 mm (23 5/8 in) fingerboard radius. The flatter board keeps string height even across the wider neck, making chords and fast runs across all five strings easier.

YGD M3 Humbuckers for Clear Low Notes

Two YGD-designed M3 double-coil pickups with oversized polepieces and ceramic magnets deliver a strong, defined signal. Their hum-cancelling design keeps the bass quiet on stage and in home recording setups, and the pickup housing provides a built-in thumb rest.

High-mass die-cast bridges on Yamaha TRBX300 series basses including the 5-string TRBX305

Bridge with 18 mm String Spacing

A high-mass die-cast bridge transfers vibration efficiently for sustain and is easy to adjust. Yamaha sets 18 mm string spacing on the five-string models, a layout it designed to suit technical slap and fingerstyle playing.

Straight-string-pull headstocks of the Yamaha TRBX300 series basses

Balanced Mahogany Body and Stable 5-Piece Neck

The solid mahogany body is sculpted with Yamaha's mass-optimised 3D design for comfort and even weight distribution. The laminated maple/mahogany neck, precision-fitted bolt-on joint and straight-pull headstock all contribute to stable tuning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I buy the TRBX305 or the four-string TRBX304?

Choose the TRBX305 if your music needs notes below the four-string's low E, or you want more notes within reach in lower positions. If not, the TRBX304 gives the same electronics with a narrower 38 mm nut and wider 19 mm string spacing, which some players find easier for slap.

How does the TRBX305 compare with the TRBX505?

Both are five-string basses with a solid mahogany body, five-piece neck and 43 mm nut. The TRBX505 uses YGD H5 Alnico V pickups with a 3-band EQ, active/passive switch and battery alert LED, while the TRBX305 offers ceramic M3 humbuckers and the five-preset Performance EQ with a 2-band EQ.

How wide is the neck compared with a four-string?

The TRBX305 measures 43.0 mm at the nut and 63.4 mm at the 12th fret, versus 38.0 mm and 56.4 mm on the TRBX304. String spacing is 18 mm rather than 19 mm, and the fingerboard radius is flatter at 600 mm.

Does the TRBX305 need a battery?

Yes, its preamp is active. Yamaha specifies a 9 V battery (DC9V S-006P / 6LR61 / 6F22 or equivalent) for its active basses, so keep a spare handy for gigs.

What strings are fitted?

Yamaha fits the TRBX305 with a D'Addario EXL170-5 five-string set, gauged 0.045 to 0.130.
