Yamaha TRBX304 4-String Active Electric Bass with Performance EQ
The Yamaha TRBX304 is a four-string active bass from the TRBX300 series, built on a sculpted solid mahogany body and a five-piece maple/mahogany neck. Its headline feature is Yamaha's Performance EQ, a five-position lever that recalls ready-voiced tones instantly, backed by a pair of YGD M3 humbucking pickups.
It suits players moving up from a first passive bass who now want onboard tone shaping without a complicated control panel. Gigging bassists who switch between fingerstyle, pick and slap within a set will find the preset lever especially handy, and the hum-cancelling pickups keep home recordings clean.
Key Features

Performance EQ: Five Ready-Made Voicings on the TRBX304
A five-position lever selects between full-spectrum EQ curves that Yamaha labels Slap, Pick, Flat, Finger and Solo. Instead of dialling in a sound from scratch, you choose the curve that matches the way you are playing and fine-tune from there. It makes changing character between songs quick and repeatable.

YGD M3 Humbucking Pickups
Both pickups are YGD-designed M3 double coils with oversized polepieces and ceramic magnets, giving a clear, strong output with good definition. The hum-cancelling design keeps the signal quiet around lighting rigs and computers, and the pickup housing doubles as a thumb rest.
Active 2-Band EQ and Pickup Balancer
Alongside the preset lever you get master volume, a pickup balancer and boost/cut controls for bass and treble. The balancer blends smoothly from neck to bridge pickup, so you can move from a round, deep tone to a tighter, more focused one without switching.

Sculpted Solid Mahogany Body
The TRBX304 body is solid mahogany, shaped with Yamaha's mass-optimised 3D contouring to balance tone, comfort and weight distribution. The result is a bass that hangs evenly on a strap and sits comfortably against the body through long rehearsals.

Five-Piece Maple/Mahogany Neck with 38 mm Nut
The laminated five-piece neck is built for stability, with a slim 38 mm nut and a 10 in (250 mm) fingerboard radius on rosewood with 24 medium frets. A precision-fitted bolt-on joint and a straight string pull at the headstock help tuning stability and upper-fret access.

High-Mass Die-Cast Bridge
A high-mass die-cast bridge transfers string vibration efficiently into the body for a full, sustaining tone. It also offers easy adjustment of action and intonation, with 19 mm string spacing that feels natural for four-string technique.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is the TRBX304 different from the TRBX174?
The TRBX174 is passive, with ceramic split-single-coil and single-coil pickups, a maple neck with a 40 mm nut and a vintage-style bridge. The TRBX304 adds an active preamp with Performance EQ, M3 humbuckers, a five-piece maple/mahogany neck with a slimmer 38 mm nut, and a die-cast bridge.
Should I choose the TRBX304 or the TRBX504?
Both use a solid mahogany body and five-piece neck. The TRBX504 moves to YGD H5 Alnico V pickups, a 3-band EQ, an active/passive switch and a battery alert LED. The TRBX304 instead offers the five-preset Performance EQ lever with a 2-band EQ, which many players find quicker to use on stage.
What is the difference between the TRBX304 and TRBX305?
The TRBX305 is the five-string version of the same design. It has a 43 mm nut, 18 mm string spacing, a flatter 600 mm fingerboard radius and a D'Addario EXL170-5 string set, while the TRBX304 has a 38 mm nut, 19 mm spacing and a 250 mm radius.
Does the TRBX304 need a battery?
Yes. It has an active preamp, and Yamaha specifies a 9 V battery (DC9V S-006P / 6LR61 / 6F22 or equivalent) for its active basses. It is worth keeping a spare in your gig bag.
What strings does it come with?
Yamaha fits the TRBX304 with D'Addario EXL170 strings, gauged 0.045 to 0.100. This is a common medium-light set for four-string bass.
