The Yamaha MODX M6 is a 61-key music synthesizer that shares its sound architecture with Yamaha's flagship MONTAGE M. It combines AWM2 sampling, FM-X and AN-X analogue-style synthesis under Motion Control, with 3,487 preset Performances and a 7-inch colour touchscreen. It suits synth players, gigging keyboardists and producers who want deep sound design without a heavy rig. The MODX M6 uses a 61-note semi-weighted FSB keyboard with initial touch, quick enough for synth leads, organ runs and rhythmic parts. At 6.6 kg and 882 mm wide, it is the lightest and most compact model in the series, easy to carry to rehearsals and to fit into a small studio desk.

The MODX M6 pairs AWM2 sample-based synthesis, with up to 128 Elements per Part for detailed pianos and strings, with 8-operator FM-X and the analogue-modelling AN-X engine. Polyphony totals 268 notes: 128 for AWM2, 128 for FM-X and 12 for AN-X, so dense layers and splits stay clear.

AN-X gives you two filters with 10 filter types, pulse width modulation, oscillator self sync, ring modulation, FM, a wave shaper and a wave folder. Voltage drift and ageing settings imitate the slight instability of classic synths, adding warmth and movement to leads, basses and pads.

Motion Control, Super Knob and high-resolution controls

Motion Sequences animate synth and effect parameters in time with the tempo, the Super Knob sweeps many settings with a single turn, and the Envelope Follower lets audio from the A/D input or another Part shape a sound. The knobs, Super Knob, pitch bend and modulation wheels are high resolution for smoother changes.

The MODX M6 is far lighter at 6.6 kg, with a semi-weighted FSB keyboard and no aftertouch.

Should I choose the MODX M6 or the CK61 stage keyboard?

The CK61 is a simpler stage keyboard with built-in speakers, battery operation and 363 Voices, which makes it handy for quick setups. The MODX M6 is a full synthesizer with three synthesis engines, deep editing, a sequencer and a multichannel USB audio interface, so it is the better pick for sound design and production.

Is the MODX M6 keyboard weighted, and does it have aftertouch?

It uses a 61-note semi-weighted FSB keyboard with initial touch (velocity response) but no aftertouch. If you want weighted, graded-hammer keys for piano playing, the 88-key MODX M8 is the model to look at.

Can I record into a computer with the MODX M6?
