The Yamaha CG192S is, in Yamaha's own words, “the flagship model of this series”, one that “offers highest satisfaction in sound quality and cosmetics”. It is the guitar the CG range builds up to.

The top is solid European spruce — not laminate, and not the generic solid spruce used further down the range. Back and sides are rosewood, the neck is African mahogany, and the fingerboard is ebony. Yamaha is explicit that the “mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard, body binding inlay are the distinct differences from other models”.

This is a serious instrument for a serious player: someone past grade exams, performing, recording, or simply wanting the last classical guitar they will need to buy for a very long time. Full 650 mm scale, 52 mm nut, gold tuners, gloss body, matte neck.

What Makes This the Flagship

Three material choices separate the CG192S from everything below it in the range, and each one does something specific.

Solid European spruce top — it improves with age

A solid top is the single biggest difference between a student guitar and a real one. Unlike laminate, solid wood keeps loosening and opening up as it is played, so the instrument you own in ten years will sound better than the one you unbox.

Rosewood back and sides with inlaid wood binding

Dense, reflective rosewood for depth and sustain, finished with genuine wood binding inlay rather than plastic trim. It is the detail that most obviously marks this out as the top of the range.

Ebony fingerboard on an African mahogany neck

Ebony is harder and smoother than rosewood, with a glassy feel that suits fast left-hand work and resists wear over decades. The flat classical radius and 52 mm nut give your fingers the room that serious repertoire demands.

Gold tuners, gloss body, matte neck

Gold machine heads on the traditional slotted headstock, an ornate wooden rosette, a gloss body and a matte neck so your thumb slides rather than sticks during long sessions.

Built on decades of hand-crafted classical experience

Yamaha describes the CG series as drawing on “decades of hand crafting fine classical guitars”, with construction influenced by traditional Spanish luthier technique. The 192S is where that shows most clearly.

Q. What does a solid top actually give me over a C Series guitar?

Two things. More responsiveness now — a solid top moves more freely, so you get more volume, more dynamic range and more tonal colour for the same effort. And improvement over time: solid wood keeps opening up with playing, whereas a laminate top sounds much the same in twenty years as it does today.

Q. Is the CG192S worth the step up from the CG182S?

They share rosewood back and sides, an ebony fingerboard, gold tuners and wood binding. The 192S adds a European spruce top and an African mahogany neck instead of nato. Those are real refinements and they do change the voice, but the 182S is a genuinely close instrument for less — try both if you can.

Q. Does a solid top need more care in the Indian climate?

Yes, and it is worth taking seriously. Solid wood moves with humidity in a way laminate does not, so avoid leaving it in direct sun, in a car, or under an air conditioner blowing straight at it. In very dry conditions a case humidifier is cheap insurance. Ask us and we will sort one out with the guitar.

Q. Is this too much guitar for a beginner?

Honestly, for a first guitar, yes — a beginner will not hear most of what they are paying for, and the C40 will teach them just as well. The CG192S makes sense once technique has developed enough that the instrument is the limiting factor. If you are buying for a student who is serious and already playing well, that is a different matter.

Q. Can I put steel strings on it?

Absolutely not — and on an instrument at this level the damage would be expensive. A classical guitar is built for the far lower tension of nylon and has no truss rod. Steel strings will pull the neck forward and can lift the bridge, and that is not covered by warranty.

Q. Can I plug it in?

Not as it comes — the CG192S is purely acoustic, as a concert classical should be. If you need amplification, a good-quality pickup can be fitted, and on a guitar this nice we would recommend a well-chosen system professionally installed rather than anything hasty. Talk to us first.

Q. Is a case included?

No — the CG192S is supplied without a case. On a solid-wood instrument at this price a proper hard case is not optional in our view: it protects against knocks and buffers humidity swings. Ask us and we will pair a suitable classical case before it ships.
