Yamaha C1X CX Series Grand Piano
The Yamaha C1X is the most compact grand in Yamaha's CX Series, crafted in Kakegawa, Japan. At 161 cm long it brings the hammers, music wire and design that the CX Series inherited from the CFX concert grand into a size that suits many homes and studios.
It is aimed at pianists who have outgrown an upright or a smaller grand: advanced students preparing for exams and diplomas, teachers, and players who want a lifetime instrument with an expressive, singing tone and three full pedals.

CX Series Hammers with CFX Felt
Every CX Series grand, the C1X included, uses hammers made from the same felt as Yamaha's CFX concert grand, adjusted to suit the size of each model. The aim is a clear tone that changes colour in response to small differences in touch, from a soft cantabile to a bold forte.
Redesigned Music Wire for Rich Sustain
Yamaha redesigned the music wire for the CX Series to give a long, sustained sound with plenty of harmonics, especially in the middle and upper registers. Combined with the C1X's spruce soundboard and ribs, it gives the piano a full, resonant voice for its 161 cm length.
Ivorite White Keys and Yamaha-Made Action
The C1X's white keys are surfaced with Ivorite, Yamaha's material that comes close to natural ivory in feel, colour and absorbency, while the black keys are WPC. The 88 keys are made of seasoned spruce and drive an action made by Yamaha, giving direct, even control of dynamics and repetition.
Hand Voicing and Regulation
Yamaha craftsmen regulate each CX Series action so that it passes on the finest nuances of touch, and voice the hammers by hand, needling the felt to shape an even, varied tone. This finishing work is what makes the C1X feel responsive the moment you sit down to play.
V-Pro Frame and Solid Structure
The iron frame of a grand must hold back more than twenty tonnes of string tension and also affects its tone. Yamaha casts its own frames using its vacuum process; the C1X uses the V-Pro frame, supported by three Merkus pine back posts and a two-piece separated bridge.
Clean CX Design in Polished Ebony
The CX Series design follows the CF Series concert grands, with simple, elegant lines, distinctive legs and no excess ornamentation. A solid pedal box lets you use the pedals with full force, and the standard C1X comes in a polished ebony finish.
Three Pedals: Damper, Sostenuto and Shift
The C1X grand piano has a full set of damper, sostenuto and shift pedals. The sostenuto pedal sustains only the notes held down when it is pressed, a technique much of the classical repertoire calls for and one that many smaller pianos cannot offer.
Soft-Close Fallboard and Safety Details
A soft-landing mechanism lowers the fallboard gently, so it cannot drop onto your fingers. The lid prop has a safety stop, the lid and fallboard can be locked, and the C1X rolls on single-wheeled solid brass casters.

Who is the Yamaha C1X best suited to?
The C1X suits advanced students, serious amateur pianists, teachers and small recital or studio spaces that want a Japanese-made grand with the tone and touch of the CX Series. At 161 cm long it is the most compact model in the CX Series, so it fits rooms where a larger grand would be too big.
How does the C1X compare with the Yamaha GB1K?
The GB1K is Yamaha's most compact grand at 151 cm long and 261 kg, with acrylic resin white keys. The C1X is 161 cm long and 290 kg, and adds CX Series hammers and music wire, Ivorite white keys, a true sostenuto pedal (Yamaha lists a bass sustain pedal on the GB1K) and lid and fallboard locks.
Should I choose a C1X or a professional upright such as the U3?
The Yamaha U3, the tallest U Series upright at 131 cm, takes up 153 × 65 cm of floor space, against 149 × 161 cm for the C1X. The C1X gives you a grand action and cabinet, CX Series hammers and music wire, Ivorite keys and a sostenuto pedal (the U3 has damper, muffler and soft pedals). Try both at YMS if you are deciding between them.
How much space does the C1X need?
The C1X measures 149 cm wide, 161 cm long and 101 cm high, and weighs 290 kg. Allow extra room for the bench, the player and opening the lid, and check doorways, stairs and lifts on the delivery route before ordering.
Can I play the C1X silently with headphones?
Not in its standard acoustic form. Yamaha also offers grand pianos with SILENT Piano, TransAcoustic and Disklavier ENSPIRE technology as separately equipped models; ask YMS if you need one of these versions.
What finishes are available?
The standard C1X is polished ebony. Yamaha says other finishes depend on the model and region, so please check with YMS about availability in India.
