The Yamaha TRBX604FM is the flagship four-string of the range. Where every TRBX below it uses a mahogany body, this one moves to a sculpted alder/maple-laminated body with a flamed maple top — a different timber recipe, and a considerably more striking instrument.

The electronics are the same proven package as the TRBX504: YGD H5 humbuckers with “quad-pole piece design and alnico magnets” for “a clean, open tone”, a three-band active EQ, and an active/passive switch with “level-matched output, whether in passive or active mode”. What the 600 series adds is “high-quality, gold-plated parts” internally, and a battery alert LED.

Alder is the classic bright, balanced bass timber; the maple laminate and flamed top add snap on the attack and figure to the finish. Five-piece maple/mahogany neck, 24 frets, high-mass die-cast bridge. Available in Indigo Blue and Natural Satin.

What the 600 Series Actually Adds

Being straight about this matters, because the honest answer is narrower than the price gap suggests — and knowing it means you buy the right one.

Flamed maple top on a sculpted alder/maple body

Yamaha's “mass-optimized 3D design” contouring in a different timber recipe from the rest of the range — brighter and snappier than mahogany, and considerably better looking under stage lighting.

Active/passive switching with level-matched output

Full three-band active EQ or a genuine passive circuit, at the flick of a switch, without a volume jump. If the battery dies mid-set you keep playing. A battery alert LED warns you first.

YGD H5 alnico humbuckers

Quad-pole piece design with alnico magnets for “a clean, open tone”, sized to work in both active and passive modes. Paired with an alder body they lean brighter and more articulate than the mahogany-bodied 504.

Gold-plated internal parts

Yamaha specifies gold-plated components in the 600 series preamp for reliability — corrosion resistance on internal contacts, which is worth having in a humid climate.

Five-piece neck, 24 frets, high-mass bridge

Maple/mahogany five-piece laminated neck for stability, a 38 mm nut with 19 mm spacing, rosewood fingerboard with 24 frets, and a high-mass die-cast bridge for sustain.

Q. Is it worth the step up from the TRBX504?

Only for the body and the looks. The pickups, EQ, active/passive switch, neck, scale and bridge are identical. What you gain is an alder/maple body with a flamed maple top — brighter and snappier than mahogany — plus gold-plated internal parts. If you want the sound of alder or you want the instrument to look special, it is worth it. If you want more capability, it is not, and the 504 is the better buy.

Q. How does alder sound different from mahogany?

Alder is generally brighter, more balanced and slightly more scooped in the mids; mahogany is warmer with a stronger midrange push. With the maple laminate and top adding attack, this is the most modern and articulate-sounding bass in the TRBX range — which suits slap and pick playing especially well.

Q. Is the flamed maple a real top or a photo finish?

Yamaha specifies a flamed maple top over an alder/maple-laminated body — real timber, not a printed finish. Because flame figure is natural, the pattern varies from instrument to instrument, so no two are quite identical.

Q. What happens if the battery dies mid-gig?

You flick the switch to passive and keep playing, with no volume jump thanks to Yamaha's level-matched output. A battery alert LED warns you before it gets that far.

Q. Does it have the Performance EQ?

No — that is a 300 series feature. The 604FM gives you a full three-band EQ instead, which is more flexible but requires you to dial in your own sounds rather than selecting a preset.

Q. Should I get the five-string TRBX605FM instead?

Only if you need notes below bottom E. The 605FM has a wider 43 mm nut and tighter 18 mm spacing, which some players love and slap players often do not. If you do not need the low B, the four-string is the easier instrument and costs less.

Q. Is a case or gig bag included?

No — Yamaha does not supply a case with the TRBX604FM. On an instrument at this price a proper case is worth having, so ask us and we will match one before it ships.
