8-Inch Powered Subwoofer Down to 22 Hz
An 8-inch cone in a bass-reflex cabinet covers 22 Hz to 160 Hz (-10 dB), well below what nearfield monitors reach on their own. That lets you hear and control sub-bass, kick drum weight and low-frequency effects before they reach other playback systems.
150 W Amplifier Built for Low Frequencies
The HS8S has a 150 W amplifier dedicated solely to driving the low end. Having its own amplification means the subwoofer handles the heavy bass load, so your main monitors are not asked to do it.
High Cut and Low Cut Crossover Controls
The High Cut control sets where the subwoofer's own output rolls off, anywhere from 80 Hz to 120 Hz. The Low Cut control, also 80 Hz to 120 Hz and switchable on or off, filters the low frequencies out of the signal sent to your monitors. Both have a centre click, so the handover between subwoofer and monitors is easy to set and repeat.
Phase Switch for Seamless Integration
A Normal/Reverse phase switch lets you flip the subwoofer's polarity so it works with, rather than against, your monitors around the crossover point. Together with the level control, it allows a subwoofer system to be set up with simple connections and no extra processing.
Inputs for the Signal, Outputs for Your Monitors
The HS8S has two balanced XLR inputs and two balanced TRS phone inputs, plus two balanced XLR outputs for the left and right monitors. Your interface or mixer feeds the subwoofer, and the subwoofer passes the signal on to the monitors.
Quieter Bass Port Design
Turbulence at the ends of a bass port can create unwanted noise. Yamaha analysed and redesigned the HS port to control these vortices, reducing audible port noise by up to 6 dB, which matters most on a subwoofer working hard at low frequencies.
Rigid MDF Subwoofer Cabinet
Like the HS monitors, the HS8S uses a dense, damped MDF cabinet with three-way mitred corner joints, a technique drawn from Yamaha's piano making. A stiff, low-resonance enclosure keeps the bass tight rather than boomy.
