Yamaha CG122MS Classical Guitar with Solid Spruce Top and Matte Finish

The Yamaha CG122MS is a full-size nylon-string classical guitar from Yamaha's CG Series, built around a solid spruce top with nato back and sides. Both the body and the neck carry a matte finish, and the rosewood fingerboard and bridge complete a traditional classical layout.

It suits students moving up from their first guitar, adult learners and teachers who want a solid-top instrument with honest, simple styling. The standard 650 mm scale, 52 mm nut and flat fingerboard mean it feels exactly as a classical guitar should for lessons, practice and performance.

Solid Spruce Top on the Yamaha CG122MS

The top is made from solid spruce rather than layered laminate. Yamaha describes spruce as giving a clear fundamental tone with wide variation depending on how you play, and notes that its tone improves as the wood matures. That makes the CG122MS an instrument that rewards careful technique and keeps developing with regular playing.

All-Matte Body and Neck

Unlike the gloss-bodied models in the CG range, the CG122MS has a matte finish on the body as well as the neck. Yamaha applies its matte neck finish as a thin coat, which it says lets the fretting hand move smoothly while still giving a secure grip and contributes to improved resonance. The result is a relaxed, natural look that does not reflect stage or classroom lights.

Yamaha CG Series bracing pattern and bridge plate, as used on the CG122MS

Bracing Pattern and Bridge Plate Tuned for Response

The CG Series uses a bracing pattern designed to deliver excellent response and rich resonance, together with a bridge plate that transfers string vibration efficiently into the top. Paired with the solid spruce top, this helps the guitar speak clearly from soft to strong playing.

Yamaha CG Series 3-ply laminate neck construction, as on the CG122MS classical guitar

Stable 3-Ply Nato Neck

Yamaha builds CG Series necks with a strong 3-ply laminate design that resists warping and twisting. This keeps the neck stable over time and allows a lower string height, which makes chords and scales easier to play cleanly.

Precision Saddle Fit for Attack and Sustain

Yamaha crafts the saddle and saddle slot to a highly accurate fit, which it says improves attack and sustain and reduces loss of string vibration. The urea nut and saddle sit on a rosewood bridge, so more of each note's energy reaches the body.

Full-Size Yamaha CG122MS Classical Guitar Geometry

With a 650 mm scale, 52 mm nut width, flat rosewood fingerboard and 11.8 mm string spacing, the CG122MS follows standard full-size classical proportions. Method books, teachers' fingerings and classical repertoire all assume this layout, so skills transfer directly to any concert-style instrument.

Classic Trim and Ready-to-Play Strings

Black and natural body binding, a decal soundhole inlay and chrome tuners give the guitar a clean, traditional appearance. It comes fitted with Yamaha S10 nylon strings in high-tension trebles and medium-tension basses.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the CG122MS different from the Yamaha CG142S?

Both share a solid spruce top, nato back, sides and neck, a rosewood fingerboard and bridge, chrome tuners and the same dimensions. The difference is the look: the CG122MS has a matte body with black and natural binding, while the CG142S has a gloss body with black and white binding. Both have a matte neck.

Should I consider the CG182S instead?

The CG182S also has a solid spruce top, but steps up to rosewood back and sides, an ebony fingerboard, gold tuners, rosewood and wood binding and a rosette soundhole inlay. Choose the CG122MS if you want a solid spruce top with simpler nato construction and a matte look; choose the CG182S for its richer tonewoods and trim.

What comes in the box with the CG122MS?

You receive the guitar fitted with Yamaha S10 nylon strings. Yamaha does not list a case or other accessories with this model, so a gig bag or case is a separate purchase if you need one.

Does the CG122MS have a pickup?

No, it is a purely acoustic classical guitar with no electronics. If you need to plug in, the CGX102 in the same family adds a Yamaha SYSTEM68N pickup with volume, tone and tuner controls and a line output.

Does the 'S' in CG122MS mean solid top?

No, the S refers to the spruce top; Yamaha also lists a cedar-top version, the CG122MC. The CG122MS top is nonetheless solid spruce, as confirmed in Yamaha's specifications.

Who is the CG122MS best suited to?

It is a full-size guitar suited to teenage and adult players, from committed beginners to intermediate students looking for a solid-top upgrade. Younger children may find a smaller instrument such as the 3/4-size CS40 more comfortable.
