Yamaha YCL-255 Student Bb Clarinet
The Yamaha YCL-255 is a standard Bb clarinet with a matte ABS resin body, barrel and bell, a Boehm fingering system with 17 keys and 6 rings, and nickel-plated nickel silver keywork. A 65 mm barrel derived from Yamaha's higher-end clarinets helps give it a focused tone.
It is designed for beginning clarinettists, from children starting in a school band to adults taking up the instrument. Because the body is not affected by humidity in the way wood is, it is a sensible choice for players who practise at home, rehearse at school and perform outdoors.
Key Features
Stable ABS Body for Any Environment
Changes in humidity do not make the YCL-255's ABS resin body swell, shrink or crack. That means it can be played outdoors and in many other settings with less worry than a wooden clarinet.
Wood-Like Look and Warm Tone
A matte surface finish takes away the shine of the ABS resin so the YCL-255 resembles a wooden clarinet and sits comfortably alongside wooden instruments in an ensemble. Yamaha describes its tone as warm and similar to that of wood instruments.
65 mm Barrel from Yamaha's Higher-End Clarinets
The YCL-255 has a 65 mm barrel based on the designs of Yamaha's more advanced clarinets, which helps produce a focused tone. Straight toneholes with tapered undercutting complete the acoustic design.
Lighter Bell with Resonance Chamber
The redesigned bell is made entirely of solid ABS resin and has no metal bell ring, reducing weight and improving response. A resonance chamber inside the bell aids projection and improves intonation on the lower notes.
Adjustable Thumb Rest for Growing Hands
The thumb rest on the YCL-255 can be set to the height that suits each player, reducing thumb discomfort and fatigue. It can be positioned for small hands and moved again as the player grows. A built-in ring gives a convenient point to attach a neck strap.
Durable Valentino Pads
Yamaha fits the YCL-255 with Valentino pads, which are more durable, easier to repair and less sensitive to temperature changes than conventional pads. That helps the keys keep sealing well through regular student use.
Boehm Keywork Built for Students
The standard Boehm system with 17 keys and 6 rings follows the fingering used in mainstream clarinet teaching. Nickel-plated nickel silver keys, stainless-steel springs and threaded posts make the mechanism robust and straightforward to service.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who is the Yamaha YCL-255 suited to?
It is a standard student Bb clarinet, so it suits beginners, school band players and adult learners. The adjustable thumb rest, lighter bell and durable ABS body make it easy for young players to handle and care for.
Is the YCL-255 made of wood?
No. The body, barrel and bell are matte ABS resin. The matte finish gives it a wood-like appearance, and the material does not crack or change shape with humidity.
What fingering system does the YCL-255 use?
It uses the standard Boehm system with 17 keys and 6 rings, the system used in most clarinet tuition and ensemble music.
Is it suitable for children with small hands?
Yes. Yamaha designed the thumb rest so it can be set for small hands and readjusted as the player grows, and the bell has no metal ring, which reduces weight. A strap can be attached to the thumb-rest ring for extra support.
What is included with the YCL-255?
Yamaha India lists a Yamaha 4C mouthpiece and a case with the YCL-255.
